jnelsoninjax
PASCO COUNTY -- A Hudson science teacher was suspended without pay for taking a class experiment a little too far. Fivay High School teacher Dean Liptak was sick of students using cell phones in class so he started using a cell jammer.
T3X4S
A shame one has to go to extreme lengths just to get kids to pay attention to something as important as science. At the same time, it sounds like this guy might be a bit of a douchelord. FunkyMike and timster 2 Share
Intersect
I heard about this on the 2600 podcast, IMO Kids do not need cell phones during the day at school they are there to learn if the need to be contacted then the parents should call the school at least ban the use of them in class. timster, Alera, Liana and 4 others 7 Share

Except that many serious school incidents, and not just shootings, have been reported to 911 by students. Fights, assaults, storm damage, medical incidents etc. It ain't the 1950's - 1970's any longer.

DocM
School safety is everyone's job, including the students. What happens if the teacher drops with a medical condition or is disabled by an attacker - perhaps by a student? In the latter case the red button is likely unavailable, so help could only be summoned fast by a quick thinking back row student. In the former running around looking for help delays urgent care when seconds count.
T3X4S
I know, if I was getting vastly underpaid, was disrespected daily, even threatened - then I see students texting or talking on their cell when they are supposed to be paying attention in class - I would do 1 of 2 things - "Surprise !! Pop Exam ! Counts 50% of your final grade " OR Murder x25 _________________ My neice taught in a bad part of Ft. Worth (Everman) - a black kid (9th grade) told her he was going to kill her if she didnt pass him - apparently he was like 18 or something. He was arrested the next day - but she constantly had to put up with so much crap. Cops and teachers dont get paid enough - thats for sure. (Of course - I mean good cops, and good teachers.) MikeChipshop Member Posted June 6, 2015 Member Share Posted June 6, 2015 When i was teaching music production, the first thing we did was lock away the kids phones. And damn right too. T3X4S 1 Share
Noir Angel
I'm no lover of kids dicking about with phones in class but a cell jammer is a step too far IMO. Just deal with it the old fashioned way and toss the kids out of the class until they learn their lesson.
Dick Montage
When I was at school in the 80's, if I needed to be contacted, my mother or father (or whoever) would call or visit the school. I don't buy this supposed "security" excuse.
Arachno 1D
Someone needs to make a cell phone repeater/jammer that will only pass-through 911 calls. Its a multi spectrum broadcast which overpowers the local tower signal hence why the provider reacted to the issue and it doesn't have a discriminator. It works in a very similar fashion in which you can block the use of vehicle remotes by overpowering the signal to the receiver. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/09/21/car_jammer_vehicle_theft_scam/ It's relatively trivial to jam a lot of remote locking devices because some idiot decided that 433-434MHz was a good place to put them. Cheap amateur radio gear will happily jam such things simply because it's using the same frequency band at significantly higher power levels. Indeed, because it's also used by the military, they might be jamming things as well. It's not unknown for someone to park their car near a radio mast, lock it up, go off somewhere and when they come back, they can't unlock the car because the radio repeater on the mast has fired up and is jamming the receiver in the car (which is built down to a cost and is therefore going to be very poor at rejecting the unwanted signal). DocM
The kids almost all have tablets anyhow as books move to digital instead of paper, and it's not exactly easy to block every VOIP or other comms option. At least a 911 call from a cell gives a better means of locating the incident site, and in some areas a precise GPS location.
123456789A
The solution is simple. Don't give the kids smartphones. They want a cell phone in school? Fine, get them something that only makes calls. T3X4S 1 Share

Don't forget about the deaf kids... they use text messaging or email on the smartphones so they can get ahold of their parents if something happens. joker999 1 Share
LaP
A shame one has to go to extreme lengths just to get kids to pay attention to something as important as science. I can't speak for this guy. But in my life i had 2 type of teachers. 1. The boring one where we would have poked our eyes with a knife instead of going to his class. We usually listened to music using our Sony Walkman inside the front pocket of our hoodies and running the headphone cable thru an hole inside the pocket to one of our ear (the one close to the wall). 2. The interesting one who did not have any problem to get our attention and make us listen to what he was saying. When Science is boring it's time to think about what you are doing wrong as a teacher. T3X4S
.... When Science is boring it's time to think about what you are doing wrong as a teacher. Makes me think of the time Richard Dawkins was quoting the new Editor in Chief of Science Magazine, when he was asked how to get people to read his magazine... "Science is interesting....if you dont agree - you can F*** off" I did post the video from youtube, but it has the F bomb in the title

The_Observer
IMHO parents should be looking the billing and seeing what time there kids are texting. If in school hours then find out why. Also give them Dum Phones!

chrisj1968
People said similar things in the 1800s with regards to newspapers, turns out new things = scary. well schools are supposed to be institutes for learning. after my generation, mine didn't have cellphones or internet (1970's-1987). we were taught to buckle down and learn. cellphones were a terrible invention to some degree. they have their uses and made our lives a little more conventient however, with these inventions we as humans have lost our ability to communicate. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen a bunch of girls having "supposed" girl time but they are all looking down at their cellphones. I think this teacher saw a problem and did the right thing. the school however is castigating this teacher who was simply trying to create an environment so he could do his job. I'm seeing how society is calling right wrong and wrong right. Is it bad? see this video. true story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUgv5MDF0cQ
LaP
You mean reading the book is not how you give classes to students? Sadly this is what some prof are doing these days. They read their powerpoint in front of the class on the projector like if the student could not read it themselves. This is extremely boring.
