Thoughts from a new MS Band owner

Recommended Posts

I've had my Band for about a week and a half, and I've been playing with it, of course. Decided to go a post about my thoughts - maybe I can help out some of the other new users with what I've seen.

First off, the battery life is good, and varies considerably depending on the options you choose. We've all read that using the GPS eats battery. As it turns out, Watch Mode does as well, which makes sense as the screen is on constantly. When I wore the Band for 2 days with Watch mode on constantly, after taking it off the charger 7 AM Monday, it died about 4AM Wednesday. Impressive battery life, but inconvenient since it counted its power-down as my wake-up time that morning. I had to delete that sleep.

So I started playing with leaving Watch Mode off. What a difference! I charged the Band Saturday morning (took it off the charger 10 AM), and only had Watch Mode on an hour or two over the weekend. Monday morning 6:30 it was still at 40% charge. I decided to top it off rather than see how much of the 3rd day I could get out of it.

So I'm thinking that turning Watch Mode off occasionally, when it doesn't do me any good, will go a long way to conserving battery and getting me that 2 days of life. So I'm trying to turn it off when I'll be out in the day - the Sun washes out Watch Mode, so it doesn't do me any good outdoors - when I'm driving or walking or flying my quadcopter would be an ideal time to save a little power with minimal loss of convenience.

I'd read about the Band disconnecting, and noticed a few occasions where the connection dropped. Bluetooth on my Lumia 1520 can be a little touchy anyway, so I was a bit concerned. However, it looks somewhat like the connection times out periodically, and is reconnected by the phone - power saving on the phone, perhaps? I've had the band disconnected, but then a notification shows up a few minutes later. Or I sync my workout data and the connection restores.

Overall I'm loving the features the Band has. While the Apple Watch is getting lots of apps. I'm not seeing a lot that are practical on a screen that small. The Band OTOH, sticks to what's practical - time, fitness tracking, notifications, timers, and I love the UV tester. No pointless games crammed onto a postage stamp here!

This is a great product, and I sincerely hope it gets the sales it deserves.

I've had it since it first came out. I just got mine replaced today with a refurbished one because of wear and tear. That process was reasonably painless too. Good product overall like you said.

The screen died on mine so I had to mail it off.  On the upside, I got a new one in the mail today.  Pretty painless and quick.  I might even buy screen protection this time around.
