Ad blocking extensions have been possible on Safari for Mac for a long time, but plugin architecture for Safari on iOS is much more limited. With iOS 9, Apple has added a special case of extension for ad blockers. Apps can now include https://developer.apple.com/library/prerelease/ios/releasenotes/General/WhatsNewInSafari/Articles/Safari_9.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40014305-CH9-SW9''>

Sadly the abuse of adverts has ruined it for everybody so yay good news.

Agreed. It wouldn't be such a problem if it weren't for popover ads. I refuse to visit sites that have popover ads on a mobile site. And if they have tiny little 'X' to close it, I won't even go back on any device, period. I banish the site from my viewing habits.
