Technique
Apologies if in wrong section. I think it's in the right one? Basically i'm running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit & i'm quite happy with it. BUT...i am curious about Windows 10. I don't want to lose Windows 7 so i was thinking of it like this... I have a few hard drives, so could i install Windows 7 on another hard drive & then let THAT hard drive upgrade to Windows 10 when the time comes, so that i would still have Windows 7 & be able to boot to Windows 10 if i felt like it? And also, what if i came to format the hard drive with Windows 7 on it - could i just re-install Windows 7 on that hard drive or would the licence then be tied to Windows 10 & i wouldn't be able to activate the Windows 7 drive? Thanks.
dragontology
Well, there are still a lot of unanswered questions about the update process, but you seem to have a solid plan. What I would recommend you do is, nuke your drive (delete the partitions), reinstall Windows 7, and then activate it. Then image the drive. Keep the image somewhere safe. The imaging programs typically include smart backup utilities. The backup can be stored on a hidden partition, or divided up into CD-R sized pieces (or DVD-R). Then upgrade to 10. If you ever want to go back, simply restore the image. I loved Windows 2000. Tried XP, hated it. Didn't want to take the plunge. Kept saying I'd go back to 2000. Never did. Ditto 7. Tried it, thought it was Vista 1.1 (and it was, before Service Pack 1), didn't stay with it. When I did, I thought I'd go back to XP, but again, I never did. I skipped 8. I like 10, but it's buggy. I love 7 but I don't think I'll go back to it. Food for thought.
Technique
I had Windows 98SE. Loved it. Upgraded to Windows XP - nothing but BSOD all the time. Clean installed Windows XP - great Bought Windows 7 & clean installed it. Loved it from day 1. Experienced Vista on someone elses laptop & didn't really like it much. Saw Windows 8 & noticed how it looked like them annoying Nokia phones. Not interested one bit. Family member bought Windows 8 laptop. I tried it out & realised i was right - it was terrible. This laptop got returned. Windows 10 seems like a half-&-half. Unfortunately Windows seems to be going the way of these squares & there's little i can do about that. Thanks. No...not if you "upgrade" the Windows 7 license to Windows 10. You lose the right to use that Windows 7 license. This is from the Windows 8 EULA .... but I'm willing to bet similar wording will be with the Windows 10 upgrade. What about upgrading the software? The software covered by this agreement is an upgrade to your existing operating system software, so the upgrade replaces the original software that you are upgrading. You do not retain any rights to the original software after you have upgraded and you may not continue to use it or transfer it in any way. This agreement governs your rights to use the upgrade software and replaces the agreement for the software from which you upgraded. After you complete your upgrade, additional software will be required to playback or record certain types of media, including DVDs. Windows 7 had the following in the EULA. . UPGRADES. To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the software that is eligible for the upgrade. Upon upgrade, this agreement takes the place of the agreement for the software you upgraded from. After you upgrade, you may no longer use the software you upgraded from. You do Realize that windows 8/8.1 have the same yet improved desktop just like windows 7 right? also the Nokia phones you are referring to are Window phones running Windows phone OS Also the fact you took the laptop back all because it had windows 8 and not 7 is just a laugh when at the time when windows 8 laptops came out you had Windows 7 downgrade rights. but at the end of the Day windows 8/8.1 is superior to windows 7 was in performance and on the desktop and still is but Now we have windows 10 and once you upgrade to 10 your windows 7 licence is null and void
