Thinkpad x230 and weak wifi signals

Recommended Posts

I have a thinkpad x230 and I've getting weak signals, internet disconnections and limited connectivity while my friends in the same room have full wifi signals. At home, I have full wifi signal bars on my T420 but fluctuating bars with the x230. I've googled and tried several methods. For example, I've deleted the driver, rebooted and let windows install the driver. I also install the Intel Wireless software but didn't do much.

Is there a way to check for wifi signal strength without being physically in that particular room?

Both laptops have the Intel Advanced N-6205 card.

Which card do you have in the T420 and the X230?

Avoid using the intel software and install the Lenovo drivers via Device Manager and see if that helps. Also disable UAPSD in the device manager - WLAN card - advanced tab to see if that makes a difference.

Also are you connected to 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz?

So you sure the antenna cable is just not loose?  Open up the case and find the card and check the antenna cable.

But the question about 2.4 vs 5ghz is valid - if your friends are on 2.4 and you are on 5 this could explain the different in bars..  Then again bars don't always mean its a bad connection.

Are you on 1 bar?  While they are on 5?  You can have a very stable connection with 1 bar - might not be full speed but shouldn't be disconnecting or not getting an IP or not finding dns which are typical reasons that it reports limited connectivity.

It's on "No Preference" for band. Should I choose either?

I'm 1-2 bars while the others full.

yeah could be a loose antenna cable or broken even, not connected.

So you don't know if your on 2.4 or 5ghz?

the antenna cables are intact and properly connected.

the band is not set, should I set it to 5ghz?

I guess you read the question a lil backwards. The preferences option doesn't matter so much however how about swapping the T420 card into the X230. Those 2 should be compatible.

Also which cards? Intel 7260/65 or 3360 or the 23XX versions?

This issue does not just affect notebooks (or even laptops) - it affects AIOs as well (my Mom's Pavilion desktop AIO has the same issue - while neither her legacy laptop running XP, or my pair of legacy notebooks running 10 IP, does NOT have the issue).  The issue is, in fact, WLAN chipset-related, and is a real pain in the rear.  Sometimes (as is the case with their wired relations), the wrong driver could have been installed - remember, I pointed out that Mom's AIO had the wrong Ethernet controller driver installed.
