+Zlip792 MVC Posted June 28, 2015 MVC Share Posted June 28, 2015 - Does this start on Windows startup? If Yes, then please post following screenshot: Either - Start > RUN and type 'msconfig' without quotes OR - Go to Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and Startup tab (only in Windows 8+) - Use this small utility to extract the output to show, which application owns this icon: URL - http://exodusdev.com/products/windows-system-tray-scan-utility The Evil Overlord 1 Share

firey
Probably from an application running on startup. Sometimes the notification bar forgets to remove icons after an application closes. You mousing over it causes a refresh which is why it disappears. It could be a system utility, or a third party program running at startup. P.S:According to @firey opinion (that I agree with) use msconfig [Run->write ''msconfig'' (without the quote signs) in the box, then press keyboard's Enter] and disable all non-MS services. Warning:Ckeck ''Hide all MS services'' at 1st.
Guest
Download some software called auto runs from the Microsoft site, this will show you what is running. There is even a little target icon that you can drag onto windows and areas of the screen and it will show you which process it is. Then you can decide what you want to do with it. xendrome
Hit the little arrow next to system tray and look at the list of icons/notification settings, it should show the name of the application. Mouseover it and it disappears is because it ran then crashed. Check Eventviewer and use Autoruns to find it.
GrandMaster
It isn't a startup application. This icon will appear hours after startup, once I mouse over it it will disappear. I've also looked through my firewall, which caches icons of all applications for which rules have been created, and there are no rules created for an application with this icon. Although, it may well use a different icon than its system tray icon. Hit the little arrow next to system tray and look at the list of icons/notification settings, it should show the name of the application. Brilliant. I looked into the Notification Area icons and found one that I did not recognize by name. It did not have a cached icon, but the name was implicit enough: xxd-0.xem Further research concluded that this is a watchdog process, an anti-cheat, for Dirty Bomb - a free to play game. As mentioned by user called Pyro666 on a cheat forum: Xigncode uses a kernel mode driver ( which functions very similarly to a rootkit, actually. kind of ironic, huh? ) to monitor different api calls into the kernel and various other things ( like object access ) At this point I'll need to verify that the icon appears some time after dirty bomb has been played and exited. I double checked firewall rules, the application has not requested any permissions. Also, PS to the rest of you guys: someone with an 03 join date knows how to check his startups
