Wake On Lan Help

Recommended Posts

I am trying to get this to work and am having some trouble.

I have setup my BIOS/UEFI to accept WOL, I have changed network settings within Windows to accept it as well.

I installed this Android app to do it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.mafro.android.wakeonlan&feature=search_result [1] [1] (please recommend a better one if there is one).

I think the issue is it is asking for an IP address and a port. I entered my MAC address, but what exactly are you supposed to enter for the IP and Port?

This one is the BEST EVER :)

Ok maybe it's mine but it's good.

IP address is, if it is any good, the subnet directed broadcast address of your network. For port anything but I'd suggest 4343 as it's high enough not to interfere with anything else.

Remember if you want to wake up from outside of your network you have a whole other world of pain to go through to get it to work :)

If you are stuck just ask.

When it's asking for an IP address and port, you need to enter your IP address not your mac address.

On Windows you can find you IP address by completing the following on Windows 7/8:

  • Click the Start button
  • Type in "cmd" without quotes and hit enter
  • A black box will pop up. In this box, type "ipconfig" without the quotes and hit enter
  • A few lines will be typed. You are looking for IPv4 Address

An IP address looks something similar to 192.168.1.101 where the last two octets may be different. It could also look like 10.10.1.101 where the last 3 octets could different and on some internal networks you may even see 172.16.1.101 where the last two octets may be different.

Looking at the documentation for this software you are using, it appears that port 9 is the default. I would start with allowing that.

Hope this helps!

I am pretty sure he knows how to get IP address, but I think the problem is the BIOS/UEFI doesnt assign an IP

Which is why you use the Subnet Directed Broadcast address so the WoL packet is sent to all machines on or off :)

My router does not allow forwarding that address, which is my current problem.

Are you running any type of web-server on another computer in the network? I think I have a PHP script that can generate the magic packet for a MAC address just by browsing to the page.

Yes if your router does not allow that you'll have to set up a WoLF (Wake on Lan Forwarder) or use Static Arp
