Instagram is finally adopting higher resolution images for iOS and Android

Instagram has slowly been adding features since its debut in 2010. But, the popular photo service has remained true to its core feature of confining photos into a square, rather than adopting the more popular 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. While the size is a bit tricky to work with at times, the real problem of the service was its poor resolution. Although 640px might have been acceptable in 2010, the spec has gotten a bit long in the tooth. Luckily, it looks as though Instagram is updating its service to support higher quality images.

Although the update has yet to hit all iOS and Android users, Instagram has gone on record indicating that they are adding support for higher resolution. Previously the service supported 640px, but now it looks as though after the update, the service will store and use images up to 1080px. This is quite a bump in quality and should be a welcome addition to the robust and popular photo service.

Instagram is currently available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone. It is unknown whether the Windows Phone version will support this new feature as it is still in beta and has not seen an update in over a year.
