I love NYC now, but damn it used to be a dump.  As I recall it was Giuliani who cleaned it up and kicked a lot of the overt criminal activity underground.  Prime example being Times Square no longer being one big porn hub.

Yeah, Giuliani came with a zero-tolerance policy against ######. Wiped the city clean. Too bad he isn't running for president. There's a guy who knows how to get ###### done.

GUN n ROSES IS STILL AROUND!

I think a lot of people floated the idea, but it never came to much.  Out of interest, what would his political affiliations be?

Talking of NYC, I am back in a couple of months.  Part of me is a little saddened that "old NYC" is gone, in so far as it was a very different place that would have been intriguing - I am not a fan of the world being sanitised.

Also, a lot of people who live & work there have suggested that 9/11 (in some horrific ways) changed the city for the better.  The 5 boroughs became one, it was a pivotal moment for the city and while I am not a fan of the hyperbolic US idea of patriotism as it is so often usurped for political gain - you could feel that NYC reacted in all the best ways possible.

I think Giuliani would be a conservative candidate without all the kooky anti-abortion/anti-gay/anti-planned parenthood/old ######. In other words -- exactly what the GOP needs but doesn't seem to be able to get together. The guy has a famous track record and he's not very polarizing as far as I know. No one really seems to hate him. They should be licking his feet to get him to run if you ask me. Then again, I get why he doesn't. Although it must be awesome to have control of all the red buttons, Being the POTUS seems like a big pain in the ass.

Times Square was a cesspool, it's a good thing it got cleaned up, but I agree they took it too far; it's like Disneyland now, basically one big tourist trap. You can still find authentic NYC if you know where to look, although even places like Brooklyn and Queens are slowly taken over by hipsters, lol. Also, pretty much every luxury apartment gets bought up by rich Chinese people, and I mean Chinese people from China, not Chinese-Americans. Same happens with entire areas in Africa now, by the way. Different subject, but pretty scary stuff if you look into it.

It's indeed interesting how a catastrophe can bring people together. Must be some old instinct or natural compassion or something. I remember seeing on TV how the entire nation "bonded" over it; everyone was a New Yorker that day. I remember seeing some documentary who told stories about people who went out of their way in the most incredible ways imaginable to help others out. Still one of the most unbelievable and saddest days (if not the) in my lifetime. That event changed everything everywhere. Every time I get on an airplane, I still feel the effects when security is a huge pain in the ass.

Haven't been back since the new WTC has opened but it does look impressive. Looking forward to my next visit.
