Apple sends out invites for September 9 event; new iPhones and Apple TV expected

Earlier this month, a report claimed that Apple was planning to schedule its next major product announcement on September 9 - and today, just as predicted, the company sent out invites for a press event being held on that day in San Francisco.

Apple is expected to unveil several new devices there, including its new iPhones. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus - as they will probably be named - will be visually similarly to the current models, but will feature some welcome under-the-hood improvements, including a new type of display with 'Force Touch' pressure sensitivity, along with a better camera, and various performance enhancements.

The new devices will be built around the latest version of the company's mobile operating system, iOS 9, which it unveiled earlier this year, and which itself features plenty of new features and improvements, including enhanced multitasking and more 'intelligence' for Siri.

As you've probably spotted, Siri is namechecked in Apple's invite for the event. As Owen Williams (our gone-but-not-forgotten former colleague, now at TNW) pointed out on Twitter, if you ask Siri to 'give you a hint' as directed in the invite, you'll get this response:

Alongside the next-gen iPhones, new iPads have also been rumored, but not everyone is convinced that these will make an appearance at next month's event.

A new Apple TV box is almost certain to be unveiled there, though. The device is widely expected to come with a dramatic improvement in performance, along with a redesigned remote featuring an integrated touchpad. A new Apple TV branch of the App Store is also expected, while a completely new user experience, built on iOS 9, will also be part of the package.

The new iPhones will go on sale on September 18, according to two German carriers which confirmed the availability date last week.
