Russian plane crash : All 224 people dead.

Recommended Posts

All 224 people aboard a Russian airliner were killed early Saturday when the Airbus A-321 crashed in Egypt's Sinai peninsula shortly after takeoff from a popular Red Sea resort town, officials say.

The Metrojet flight, carrying 217 passengers and seven crew members, was en route from Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt to St. Petersburg when it dropped off radar screens 23 minutes into the flight.

It is believed to be the deadliest air accident in the history of Russian aviation, surpassing a 1985 disaster in Uzbekistan in which 200 people died, the Russian-run news agency RIA says.

"Unfortunately, all passengers of flight 7K9268 Sharm el-Sheikh-Petersburg were killed," The Russian embassy in Cairo said, in Russian, on Twitter. "We express our condolences to the family and friends."

Egyptian officials said the 7-person crew and 214 of the passengers and all of the crew were Russian and that three of the passengers were Ukrainian, RT.com reports. The victims included 17 children, aged 2 to 17, according to Russian authorities.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a statement expressing his condolences to the families of the victims and declared a day of mourning. A team of Russian investigators was sent immediately to Egypt, according to Russia's Emergencies Ministry, the Russian state-run news agency RIA reports.

There was no other immediate word on the cause of the crash, although the Egyptian government ruled out the possibility that it could have been shot down.

The Islamic State group's affiliate in Egypt, however, claimed it was responsible for the crash, the AFP news agency reported. "The soldiers of the caliphate succeeded in bringing down a Russian plane in Sinai," said the statement circulated on social media, according to AFP. The claim could not immediately be verified.

1) condolences to all the families of course.

2) if IS is involved, they just made a huge mistake. One that has the possibility to get US, Russian and Arab leaders on the same page.

Pilot reported technical problems after take-off and asked to land in the nearest airport.

even if this is true, it does not mean it was/was not the cause of the crash.

It's Highly unlikely that Isis was involved given the altitude the jet was flying unless they were able to get bomb onboard.

They probably claimed responsibility just to drum up some fear and to give themselves PR ammunition for those horrific videos they make.  I agree that their involvement is pretty unlikely unless they were able to get a person and/or explosive device onto the plane.

There are MANPADS that can reach 25,000 feet, and who knows what IS has appropriated in Iraq and Syria.

Were you one of the henchmen, since you're so certain about it?

Every air agency investigation report came to the same conclusion: it was a Russian 9N314M warhead, likely on a Buk missile, that brought it down. Buks were photographed entering from Russia shortly before the incident, entering insurgent held territory. Those require training to use. Either it was operated by Russian troops or Russian troops trained those who did.

If it walks, quacks and swims like a duck....

Doc, confused.  Are you talking about MH17 or KGL9268?  Regarding KGL9268, I haven't seen any "conclusions" on why the plane went down.  The ISIS propaganda video looks very suspect (i.e. fake).  I'm not saying it wasn't a missile but I think it is way too early to draw conclusions until the investigators do their thing.  It has been reported that ISIS in the area are not believed to have missiles capable of hitting planes at 30k feet.

What is known is that the plane broke up in mid-air.  Causes for this would be 1) bomb on board, 2) missile or 3) catastrophic inflight event (think TWA 800 probable cause).

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (AP)  The Russian jetliner that crashed shortly after takeoff from an Egyptian resort city broke up at high altitude, scattering fragments of wreckage over a wide area in the Sinai Peninsula, Russia's top aviation official said Sunday as search teams raced to recover the bodies of the 224 people who died.

Meanwhile in Russia, an outpouring of grief gripped the historic city of St. Petersburg, home of many of the victims. President Vladimir Putin declared a nationwide day of mourning, and flags flew at half-staff.

Aviation experts joined the searchers in a remote part of the Sinai, seeking any clues to what caused the Metrojet Airbus A321-200 to plummet abruptly from 31,000 feet just 23 minutes after it departed from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh bound for St. Petersburg.

Aviation experts and the search teams were combing an area of 16 square kilometers (more than 6 square miles) to find bodies and pieces of the jet.

By midday, 163 bodies had been recovered, according to the Egyptian government. Some of the dead were expected to be flown to Russia later Sunday.
>
The large area over which fragments were found indicates the jet disintegrated while flying high, said Alexander Neradko, head of Russia's federal aviation agency. He would not comment on any possible reason for the crash, citing the ongoing investigation.

Neradko was in Egypt to inspect the crash site along with Russia's emergency and transport ministers.

Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov thanked Egyptian authorities for their help and said work on analyzing the data and cockpit voice recorders had not yet begun.

Nevermind your conspiracy theories, do you even remotely understand how disrespectful (at the very least) you're spouting nonsense about karma when innocent people died?

A U.S. satellite that was over Sinai at the time of the crash detected a heat flash, according to a U.S. official directly familiar with the latest information in the investigation. U.S. intelligence and military officials are analyzing the data to determine whether the flash occurred in midair or on the ground and what that can tell them about what happened to the plane, the official said.

Analysts say heat flashes could be tied to a range of possibilities: a missile firing, a bomb blast, a malfunctioning engine exploding, a structural problem causing a fire on the plane or wreckage hitting the ground.

"The number of heat signatures is crucial," said CNN aviation analyst Miles O'Brien. "If, in fact, only one was detected, that in some respects might steer one away from a missile launch and onto some idea of an explosion onboard the aircraft."

A top Russian aviation official has said the plane broke apart in midair.

The Russian plane that crashed in Egypt at the weekend "may well have been brought down by an explosive device", Downing Street has said.

All flights between the UK and Sharm el-Sheikh have been suspended on Wednesday evening as UK experts assess security at the Egyptian airport.

Number 10 said flights had been delayed as a "precautionary measure" after "more information has come to light".

Russian Airbus 321 crashed on Saturday, killing all 224 people on board.

"We would underline that this is a precautionary step and we are working closely with the airlines on this approach," a Number 10 spokesman said.
Aviation experts have travelled to Egypt to make an assessment of the security arrangements at the Egyptian airport and expect to complete an investigation tonight.

'An explosive device'

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said the delays would allow UK experts time to make sure "the right security measures are in place".

"We can not categorically say why the Russia jet crashed but we have become concerned that the plane may well have been brought down as a result of an explosive device," he said.

BBC transport correspondent Richard Westcott said there was some concern over airport security screening in Sharm el-Sheikh.

Following the announcement, EasyJet said it had delayed two UK-bound flights from the resort - one to Gatwick and one to Luton airport - this evening.

"We are doing all possible to keep passengers informed," a spokesman added.
A spokesman for British Airways, which is due to fly to Sharm el-Sheikh on on Thursday, said: "Things are moving fast and we are waiting for the government to update later in the evening."
