Does anyone own the Yamaha RX-V679BL AV receiver?

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone owns the Yamaha RX-V679BL. I was wondering if it was possible to disable the OSD (on screen display) when adjusting the volume.

The sony I just had and am returning, STRDH750 would output 480p to show the OSD of the volume icon in the bottom of the screen while watching a 1080p video on the my projector. This would make the projector think it just switched resolutions thus the picture would go out and the audio too as it would adjust the picture for 480p each time I would press volume up or down on the remote.

Just making sure this one doesn't do that too.

The manual is not laid out very well.  I almost bought this receiver, it's a very good choice.

I'm upgrading my theater.

what arrived today was that sony receiver I have back in the box ready to get picked up tomorrow for return.

I wouldn't think it'd be an issue with modern kit...my Onkyo HT-S5800 shows the OSD in 1080p.

(Probably any other resolution as well, but I don't have any 4k kit to test.)

You wouldn't think. A lot of people were complaining about that issue with that sony receiver. It's such a stupid problem which could easily be fixed with a firmware update.

What a hellishly annoying (IMHO) "design flaw"

There were MANY people on the internet bagging for a simple firmware update which would allow them to turn off the OSD. Of which there wasn't one.

I have those Polk center channel and the modest PSW10 subwoofer.  Why not get the Polk Monitor 40s for the front channel speakers?  Or their floor standing monitors?  Polk speakers are going to sound way better than any Japanese counterparts.  Many many years ago, a guy I knew who worked at this high-end audiophile shop said that you're fine when getting components from Japan, but speakers should come from US or Britain.  They just make better stuff.  I don't know if that's still the case, but I would reckon you'd be better off getting all the same brand of speakers.  My little Monitor 40s (which are bookshelf speakers) sound exquisite.
