People are getting bored of Facebook and Instagram, study says

Recommended Posts

I don't think "bored of" is a fair assessment of the information - rather their usage has changed.  Facebook had it's moment in the light, and it was pretty long for a social media app, but it's not faded into obscurity - it's simply become ubiquitous, an appliance that we use rather than one we focus on.  It still serves it's purpose, just that purpose is now run-of-the mill rather than a highlight.

While it can bring out the worst in people, I don't see this as "facebook's fault" but rather the issue of social interaction without repercussion that is offered by distant, quasi-anonymous interactions.  I am far from one of those people who take this ridiculous, elitist "anti Facebook" attitudes and look down upon it's users.

I wonder how much of that is being told how you should interact with these services rather than allowing users to choose. I know the top stories on Facebook annoys me and now you cannot automatically log out I'm using it less and less. And if Instagram changes to the similar top story instead of it's current linear time based approach then I'll stop or reduce my usage.

I have noticed less and less real people posts and my timeline is now more public interest pages than anything else but I can get that info from Twitter if required and in the date order it came in as.

"Trending" annoys the hell out of me, and moreover it's self-fulfilling...

Of course these stories are popular, you are prioritising them, thus making them more popular!

All FB does is ###### me off.  I use the webapp on my phone if I ever get a message and want to respond.  Now I am getting redirected to download the FB Messenger app since they are going to remove the messaging feature from the webapp.  I don't like having 2 separate apps for the same damn thing.  One to post on FB or reply to posts, and now one to send a damn message.  I dont use FB much anyway, but this will just make me use it even less.

Stop using it?

They serve two very distinct purposes.  If you don't like Facebook, but still use the messenger, then uninstall the Facebook app.

And save a lot of space on your phone, as well as improve battery life.  Every cloud has a silver lining :)

I think it's interesting how Facebook has evolved to more than "just a social network", which is why it'll stay relevant for a while. People use it nowadays to get news (whether general or on some topic that interests them), plan or follow events. Hell, the groups are even used for classrooms/studies!

They were also smart to separate the messenger from the main app on mobiles. I find it funny that both Fb Messenger and WhatsApp seem to be competing for the same users while belonging to the same company.

Instagram, on the other hand, has always struck me as a fad, which I wouldn't mind passing on. Tried it, wasn't interested. Could say the same for Snapchat.

I mostly use FB to scroll through and laugh at meme's. Other than that, FB doesn't offer me much.

You're in luck. You can scroll through Neowin & do the same thing:

I used to be a facebook ######, however in the last year or two I find myself using it less and less. It used to be fun on there and it was exciting catching up with old friends, however facebook as become a political landscape with everyone having a point to make. It has changed the way people behave online and I find you cannot have ANY conflicting views to anyone without getting in to some form of pointless argument. I ended up creating many new profiles over the years, each one having less and less "friends" (who I actually knew) until finally I only have my direct family on there simply for sharing pictures of the kids etc. I find no point in it now unless you like to argue for no reason, with people that don't mean anything.

Stating the obvious here: They're boring because all people do is post crap memes and things. Most everything I see on FB is old news or unfunny pics and memes taken from more popular sites and put into these trash groups on FB

Simple... I hide treading and sponsors...  :)

FB is clean.

All i see friends' posts.

That's why people don't look deep on how to hide the sections such as treading, ads, etc. All they do is complain without looking deep...   later they go like "Oh.. My bad."  or "I didn't know that."

As hipster as this is going to sound, Facebook really died off for me as soon as they opened registrations outside of college campuses. It used to literally be designed for students to communicate with others at their campus or stay in touch with people after graduating high school. Or to go to organized events at campus.

Now it's become another medium or tool used to market items and even worse, keep up with baby pictures or listen to angry moms get on soapboxes about some minor injustice that blows up into something huge. The instant outrage of social media over dumb nonsense really turns me off to even using Facebook.

I have to scroll for what feels like an eternity before I see something that isn't an ad or page, and actually posted by an individual in my friends list... then I realize it's because most my friends also gave up on posting anything... for the same reasons.

As a result, I only use it for news feeds, as in CNN, local news from a ABC/CBS/NBC affiliate, etc.. it's basically useless to me for anything else. And before anyone else tries and says I need to clean the thing out, I have only 15 or so pages I've liked and went from over 1000 friends down to 100. Instead of seeing content from those remaining friends, I am instead offered suggestions to pages or products I like. And while facebook does a pretty good job at targeted advertising for these pages, I'd rather use it for what I originally signed up for... keeping in touch with close friends.

Instagram has also gone the sponsored route, as well as twitter. As soon as something starts getting put on the stock market, I realize I should probably start closing up shop, and look for another medium, as it'll soon be overrun with sponsors and ads.

It does sound hipster, but that doesn't necessarily discredit what you're saying.  Obviously we know the reasons behind the commercialisation.  Maybe a news aggregator would suit you better?

I did use twitter as my news feed, but even they are now showing tweets out of sync and not chronologically. I am looking at something called miniflux, seems to be promising.
