remotely serving applications?

Is it possible to serve just applications rather than the full screen, like RDS or http://www.tsplus.net/ can share just an application from a server to a remote computer rather than serving up the full desktop experience?

 

or like Vmware can do with Unity

 

Preferably to a client which can be run on Windows and / or Linux
