Storage Spaces parity with different size drives

Recommended Posts

I'm getting mixed  comments on Google on this one and would like to get an answer from people who have tried before trying to move my btrfs based array into Storage Spaces. This involves moving around 13TB of data so I'd like to get definitive answers first before I dive in.

This is for my home storage. I'm currently using btrfs with RAID6 (not recommended) with around 22TB raw storage and am trying to move away from it because btrfs RAID5 is living on the wild side with your data. But I also wanted to do parity and grow my array one drive at a time as drive sales go up. My question is, does Storage Spaces only use space equal to the smallest disk or does it intelligently use up all the available space on my larger drives? I am aware of the parity performance hit and the no rebalance option but I can deal with those. If I can't do this with Storage Spaces, unRAID may be my final option.

Much thanks!
