Last week, Microsoft published its latest financial results, for the fourth quarter of its 2016 fiscal year (Q4 FY2016). It was a good few months for the company's Office business, along with strong performance in its cloud business, and decent growth for its Surface hardware line. But as anticipated, it was another bad quarter for its phone division, with revenue falling by 71% year-over-year.
However, Microsoft did not immediately reveal its phone sales volumes for Q4 FY2016. At the end of its 2015 fiscal year, its 8-K form submission to the SEC included a breakdown of how many phones it had sold; but the 8-K for FY2016 included no such details.
Now, though, the company has submitted its 10-K form to the SEC, and it includes the information needed to work out how many phones it sold last quarter.
The document reveals that Microsoft sold 13.8 million Lumia handsets during FY2016. We also know how many smartphones it sold during the first three quarters of the fiscal year:
- Q1 FY2016: 5.8 million
- Q2 FY2016: 4.5 million
- Q3 FY2016: 2.3 million
That means that Microsoft sold just 1.2 million Lumia Windows phones last quarter, a drop of almost 50% compared with the previous quarter.
The total number of Windows phone sales for the quarter - including those of Microsoft's hardware partners - is unlikely to be much higher than that. In the first quarter of this calendar year (Microsoft's Q3 FY2016), data from industry analysis firm Gartner indicated that just 100,000 non-Lumia Windows phones were sold - equivalent to just 4% of the 2.3 million Windows phones that Microsoft sold during the same period.
In addition to the 13.8 million Lumias sold during FY2016, it also sold 75.5 million feature phones. That compares with sales of 36.8 million Lumias and 126.8 million feature phones during its previous fiscal year.
Microsoft announced the sale of its feature phone business to Foxconn in April for $350 million.
