Not just that... It's also a great marketing tool, they can package it up into other software (I.E. (no pun intended) AOL) and it's an excellent delivery solution for their .NET services to non-windows users.

Internet Explorer has about an 85% to 93% total market share of home users.

Total Profits from IE: $0.00

So the question remains, why does Microsoft make Internet Explorer?

Completeness. How do they benefit? Integration.

Most people who buy a computer, buy it with an operating system (Windows) and with the main intention of surfing the 'net. This is impossible without a browser. When I first purchased a computer with Windows 95, it came with Internet Explorer 3. Without it I would have to go to a store and purchase Netscape or another alternative.

Windows now comes with a function called Compressed Folders, a basic zip utility. I believe this is a very good idea, many downloads are in the zip format and newbies are left clueless what to do with them. I don't see the Winzip people whining.

Two more programs I would like to see with Windows are a download manger (i.e. Getright) and a good FTP program like FTP Voyager.

The other question, why does Netscape make a browser?

They don't, Mozilla now makes it for them.
