What PC to get for Longhorn

Recommended Posts

Here I am addressing anyone testing Longhorn...I am currently running an Athlon XP 1800+ with 512 MB of ram...As my operating system is XP and since i dont play games...it's pretty much ok right now

Yet I believe it wont be enough for Longhorn right?

I was wondering what is the minimum you guys advise me to get...

Should I buy an Athlon XP 2800/3200 now?

or should I wait and get an Athlon 64? Is Longhorn much much better with an Athlon 64 ?

Thanks for your replies :)

being that the release is not until around 2005/2006 I would not upgrade until around that time. Upgrading now would just do nothing for it since by the time it's released you might want something nicer to run it on.

mmm I hate those "wait and see" situations...I guess you're right I better wait though ...

Overall, do you guys think that these past alpha releases were more resource-consuming than XP?

Aplha's always take up more resources. That's why it's called an Alpha. Nothing is optimised at all since it's stilling being worked on. Once the beta's hit though it will start to get better. But yeah it did take up a bit. loved the IE memory leaks at times was fun.

Without a doubt, any Alpha version of Longhorn is gonna take up way more memory than XP... XP's a fully tested, optimized and released operating system, vs. one that won't be released for at least another year and a half. That's just the nature of such software. As for what kinda PC you're gonna need, go ahead and upgrade now, by the time Longhorn comes out, it'll be time to upgrade AGAIN. I had an Athlon 1700XP, went to a 2500XP with a new motherboard and all... good upgrade, not too expensive, and a very nice speed boost. Going from an 1800 to a 2800 prolly wouldn't be a bad idea, if you can afford it, and need it.
