I need Help with XP...Modem problems...

Recommended Posts

I'm having trouble with XP:ermm: I know its not my ISP because it was just working fine with windows98se. I just upgraded from win98se to WindowsXP Pro and now my connections seem to be laggy, unstable and high ping while in games. I also d/l at stupid speeds like 900bps, I connect to the net @ 48 - 50k/bps

I have a Supra Express 56e Pro with win2k drivers. Also when browsing with IE new windows do open...but the pages never load. I've tried everything in the book :| still nothing so i need help from you lovely people :)

I know its something to do with XP...

Go to windows update 1st....see if there's a new driver for your modem. If that doesn't work look around the net for the manufacturer of your modem and see if they've got xp compatible drivers. If all else fails try uninstalling your modem and reinstalling it with the win2k drivers. If that doesn't help....then get a new modem my friend.:D

I would imagine that connections and reliability should be better, not worse, but then I don't know what's happening with your system.

Double check your phone cord connections (make sure the RJ-11 jack tab is not broken off). Triple check the phone line connection from your modem to wall. (The cable should be straight through, but the 2 wires should be crimped correctly. Disconnect and examine the RJ-11 connectors. If you look straight down on the end of each plastic connector, you should be able to see metal at the end of each wire (usually red and green) inside the connector. Normally, the wire is exposed where it's cut and inserted for crimping into the connector, but sometimes the wire insulation is stretched and the wire doesn't get inserted far enough, so when the connector is crimped, the wire doesn't have a good enough connection and may be the cause of problems because not enough metal to metal contact is present - especially if the wire is stranded)

Double check your serial cable and the connection.

Since it's an external modem, you need to double check your serial port settings (in BIOS and in the OS) and the modem settings. Make sure the IRQ's are right, and of course match the correct parity, bits, stop bits, bitspeed, etc.

Try setting S10=255. In the Network and Dial-Up Connections, make sure your ISP connection (with modem) has IP header compression enabled, uses the default gateway, and under the Networking tab of your dial-up setting, make sure the Settings for LCP extension are enabled. Do not enable HARDWARE compression and SOFTWARE compression at the same time. Use one or the other. (Is the HW compression sofware selectable for your modem, or is this set with a dip switch?)

Check out the info on the firmware version 2.210 (recommened). "To find out your modem firmware or driver revision open a terminal program such as Hyperterminal, and type in ATi103 (or ATi3 if ATi103 fails). You will see a version number such as v2.1.2.156.009a, etc. "

ftp://ftp.diamondmm.com/pub/communication...rmware_2210.exe

Update your modem firmware to the version listed above.

If that doesn't help, ensure you use the drivers made for NT4/2000. If that doesn't help, use the drivers made for compatible chipsets

Since it's external, I must agree that if you can't find a plausible solution, the problem is more likely to be the modem.

The problem could still be with your ISP. I remember when going to V.90 my ISP never informed me and I had all sorts of problems because their modems only supported V.90. The emerging standards this time are V.92 and V.44. Contact your ISP. Alternately, I find when one of my ISP's RAS serverbanks is acting up and slowing down that when I dial into another my downloading acts properly.

I've also messed about with this QoS thingy...I've set it up to 50 and browser and d/ling is now faster. It only seems to work with IE I still get high pings.

If you haven't found a solution yet, my advice is to find the manufactures name, go to drivers guide and look up your modem. The manufacturer may have a driver built for XP. If not, use NT4 drivers. That is what I had to do for my modem. It may not help but it is worth a try. Better than buying a new modem unless you are looking for an excuse to buy a new one.
