SB Live 5.1: 4 Speaker Problem

Recommended Posts

I just got a SB Live! 5.1 Sound Card, and I have Cambridge Soundworks (a division of Creative) speakers. However, whenever I load up WinXP, it only gives me 2 speaker support when I have all 4 connected. Only until I go to my mixer settings and re-set the value to 4.1 or 5.1 will all 4 speakers work. Is there a way to make them work when WinXP is started?

I had the same problem using AudioHQ 1.5.1. I tried every driver, but the problem was still there (except with the driver provided by microsoft, which didn't support the ac3 decoding that i needed). But I think I found the solution, at least it works with my computer: do not load the audiohq drivers at startup (you can disable them by running msconfig.exe and, under Services, disable the audiohq drivers). In my case, if I ran this program during the startup, my settings would automatically reset to 2 speakers... And also be sure that the settings in the Control Panel for the speakers are set to "quadriphonic speakers"...

what the heck... don't use those.. simply just use the default XP drivers then go to sound options in control panel and change the "speaker settings" and then change it to 4.0 or 5.1 and you'll have full use of all those speakers... That's what i do and i get full 5.1 Sound in Max Payne (no Liveware or any Creative drivers installed.. just default XP drivers)

whoa.... 7.1!! What the heck :) hehe... could i move in? I have a 5.1 system and loving it. The Creative Inpsire 5300s are the bomb!! :)

I thought it was the card that does the decoding instead of the drivers? Anyways... which software you're using that doesn't decode AC3 audio anyways? I am using the default drivers and i have digital out (which would let the speakers or external amp do the decoding) and 5.1 set up and all my speaker work, except when playing MP3s but what's the sence of using the center channel for that? When normal Windows audio and 2 channel AVI and MPGs play it's in 4.1 and then when DVDs and games that were encoded properly i get the full 5.1 like Max Payne and in that lil demo in 3DMark2001. The center speaker runs depending on the location of the sounds so i guess that's 5.1 :) I have a SB Live 5.1 DE and i've never installed Liveware or anything else.... plus.. when i install Red Faction and check the settings... i have the option to use EAX sounds and that's with the NORMAL DRIVERS which Liveware is supposed to be for...

The Audio HQ is a waste of time cuz (if you have XP and 5.1 systems or higher) it only allows you to change the speaker settings and that's built into all Windows already so why the heck would we need it? For people from older windows and stuff then i see the reason for the drivers but if you're on XP all that extra Creative bloatware isn't necessary if XP already detected your card and all the channels work like they spose to?
