Drimo
I have been using Windows Movie Maker to compile and format my videos into wmv's. It has been working out for a while because wmv has ok quality for my needs, but the wmv's I create do not play at all in Linux (while wmv's I download to my hd do play correctly). What I want to do is join a few video clips together as one video file and format it in such a way that it will have good quality (around that of vcd) and still remain as small as possible. I also want to be able to play this back in Linux. So, my question is: what would be a good video format for my intended purposes?
Got3n
use movie maker to join them and then export to dvi video quality. (Goten)
Drimo
use movie maker to join them and then export to dvi video quality.(Goten) I don't recall seeing "DVI" as an option for the output type. All I remember seeing are the different types of WMV, for example, "Video for Broadband - 192 kbps." Maybe I'm wrong, but I'll check it when I get home from work. eds
DVI is in the AVI format I believe. Some devices arent recognized by WMM to input in this format. AVI is great quality but the files are huge. About 1GB per 10 minutes of video (640 x 480, ~30fps).
Drimo
I guess I should clarify what the source of the videos are. I use my tv capture card to record things, then edit out the commercials using a video splitter program. I believe the clips are in mpg. Then I usually combine the clips using Windows Movie Maker and save the video under "Video for Broadband - 192" because it has decent quality and good compression. Got3n
in my MM i can export to High quality, look for something for 640x480 30fps it was hidden from me at first till i dug for it. if not then goto google and type in WMV to AVI or WMV to MPG and see what you get. rezza Veteran Posted February 13, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 13, 2004 WMVs play fine in linux, you just need to install the win32 codecs... check the mplayer page for advice: www.mplayerhq.hu

However, in the first post I stated that WMV's play fine in Linux, but the one's that I create in WMM do not. That is my dillema.

Drimo
I checked out the dvi format over the weekend and it is how I thought it would be: way too large. I also tried a divx format, which was also too large. So I guess I'm left to just experimenting with different formats. Just one more quick question. Are there Digital Rights Management restrictions on WMV files? Is it possible that the WMV's I am creating cannot be played on my Linux os because of DRM?
