slowestborg
I know its still a long way away but.... Reading all the news about Longhorn, I havent heard anything about the possibility of Microsoft including its own DVD decoder directly into the OS so that you can play DVD's from WMP without installing a 3rd party player first. I know right now WMPs DVD playback is no where near the quality and capability of say WinDVD or PowerDVD. But it really shouldnt be so difficult to include a decoder with the OS. I understand the licensing issues but MS could easily slap on an additional fee on the OS price to cover that. If they ever do that, maybe WMP could be improved to handle DVD's better, because it may be put through more rigorous testing. Don't ya think? What's your take on it? ForkliftDude
can you say "antitrust"?
y_notm
do you REALLY want to shell out an extra $20 to play DVDs out of the box? (That's the licensing fee to include DVD playback in a product, PER COPY, or at least it used to be, i don't know what it is now) I know I don't, and I'm sure a lot other people agree. If you have a DVD-ROM/+/-RW, chances are playback software came with it for free, so whats the use of bumping the price of the OS when its unnecessary? NeoMayhem
Apple does it, and their DVD player is sweet. MS should include there own to, it is one less thing to buy.
nuka_t
ya, but one more thing to pay for. i think they will have it though cause they have integrated dvd writing so dvd playing is a must.

BTallack
Most manufacturers include a DVD player with their machines anyway. HP, Compaq, Gateway, Medion, Sony, Toshiba, EMachine, and Dell all do anyway.

I dont see the makers of VLC and Mplayer suing apple for including a DVD player with OS X... Things included with the OS is generally good, it is just when they pull a stunt like IE and make it impossible to remove that I get p*ssed off. But yeah, they probably would get sued... Oh well, I dont use windows anyway.
