I associate it with websites that just lead to porn.

FxP boards (or whatever they are) are usually full of people sucking up to get stuff.

And Direct Connect(though I may be incorrect) U need to suck up to people to get files off them.

That is all I can really say that holds within neowin forum rules :)

www.edonkey2000.com best p2p filesharing program ever :)

Napster's Directors tried to use that same excuse (and we all know what happend there) ;) :p

This is what voodoo said in another post

from dicionary.com

1. warez

/weirz/ A term used by software pirates use to describe a cracked game or application that is made available to the Internet, usually via FTP or telnet, often the pirate will make use of a site with lax security.

Software piracy is illegal and should be reported to the Federation Against Software Theft (FAST).

2. warez

/weirz/ n. Widely used in cracker subcultures to denote cracked version of commercial software, that is versions from which copy-protection has been stripped. Hackers recognize this term but don't use it themselves. See warez d00dz

So technically.. he hasn't said DiVX are warez... but what does warez mean?? and what does it cover?

I mean.. DivX can be covered by the same rules as mp3s... and what are they?

Isnt that cracking DVD encription and copying to divx to distribute over the net?
to denote cracked version of commercial software, that is versions from which copy-protection has been stripped

commercial software = dvd / move etc

I think i covered about evey situation, because warez is circumventing a person/ companies intellectual and property rights

The one thing I will say about warez is this. You should use it for nothing more than to try. I have bought a lot of software in my days that did not work out or was not exactly what I wanted. And we all know what trying to return sofware or games are like.

If you like some game/software that has "came" into your possession, and are going to regularly use that software, you should go out and buy the real software in 30 days, that is plenty of time to evaluate a fully functional piece of software........60 days if it's real expensive. Its just the right thing to do.

yeah its a nice thought but only 5% of people actually go out and buy it if they have a fully working "free" copy right in front of them

Hey FBI. I'm over here.... *delete*

you do realise that while your attempting to be funny that legally if neobond was contacted he would have to give ips of the people that are engaging in software piracy right?

eh, most of these people are teenagers who don't think it's a serious offense.

main point is this - warez is not justifiable by any means. it's your choice to use certain software, and it's not a live-or-die situation (say like stealing food). if you do warez, fine, but keep it to yourself. bragging about it in a public forum could only lead to more trouble than its worth.

If I stole a few warez from someone would that make it legal. After all two wrongs make a right.... LOL. Personally I am not sure if I have warez or not. I may have been conned by a software pirate where I bought my "legal" software from. Funny thing is the dude left the country and his shop was closed..... Just up and left overnight. Damn my software looks good but is it????

I have used warez before and I have bought good games [like Tribes 2 - played it on warez, loved it and so I bought it]. But most of the games out there are crap [Oni, Alice, Gunman - all ok, but not worth any money]. I think the next games worth BUYING will be Unreal Tournament 2, Halo [PC] and Doom 3. There will be others but those are the key releases that I will probably BUY [DEFINITELY Halo for PC... I won't warez it because of all the amazing work done to it]. Saying that, I will still probably play many deeply mediocre games in the mean time [like RTCW - boy does that game suck... the single-player is pathetic].

Anyway, I want a nice Wipeout convertion for PC now... I'd REALLY like to see that now. Dunno why, it's only just occured to me that I'd like to get that for PC.

As for movies and MP3's.... they AREN'T counted as warez at all. Don't even joke about it - they're illegal BUT NOT WAREZ.

ah ha

I never actually said I had illegal software, I just said I had fully functional software (i.e. freeware).

I never actually said any of my DivX were not backup copies of original items, or were copyrighted material.

Also.. I doubt "law enforcement" (probably american?) would travel overseas to determine if one person is breaking the law.

"law enforcement" agencies usually chase after groups who distribute, as with drug dealers.

ggpldthx :)

I don't think that anything on my computer, except for the hardware, was paid for...

I just 'try' the products before I buy them. Because eventually I will buy everything that i download :D :D :D

I'm a 16 year old student that makes $5-6,000 a year designing the web page for a local PBS television station - and I blow most of that money on my '96 Mustang. Therefore - I don't have the money to pay $4-600 for a piece of software or multple pieces of software.

It's also my opinion that warez is changing because I use to use plain warez sites but all the porno and pop-up windows made me stray from that to where I just use Kazaa type programs to get all my software and then I go hunting on warez sites if there is something hard to find.
