How do you name and structure your music?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious how we all format and organize our music. I want to know what most people use so I can follow along! ;)

I used to use...

\Music\Artist - Album\Artist - # - Title

Now I use...

\Music\Artist\Album\{VARIES}

When I say {VARIES} I mean that my files are mixed at this point, they vary between

\Music\Artist\Album\# - Title

and

\Music\Artist\Album\Artist - # - Title

What do we all use? I know iTunes likes...

\Music\Artist\Album\# - Title

What's the best way to name and organize your music?

Thanks,

amoeba

i just let itunes handle it...

before i tunes, i just tossed it in the "my music" folder, and named it "artist - song name". i used a jukebox program that could read id3 tags automatically and worked much the same way itunes does, but without the playlists.

Since not all music is tagged, and sometimes, not all music is sorted, I prefer to have everything in the filename.

This makes for some nasty sorting tho if you have everything in one folder.

Here's our structure:

Music\First Letter\Artist\Album\Artist - Album - #. Name.ogg

For compilations, we have a separate folder:

Music\_Compilations\Album\Album - #. Artist - Song.ogg

There's a !Soundtracks folder in the _Compilations folder with the same structure.

Of course, we've got just under 20,000 mp3s at work, so we also have a script that can search by filename. We're still trying to figure out how to make it search my ID3 tag instead, but no luck yet.

I like WMP9 to handle it, but I have it stored like this:

\My Documents\My Music\Artist Name\Album Name\artist name-song.wma

\Mp3\(here could be oldies(<1980) or normal(>1980))\Artist\Album\Artist - # - Title

With WMP9 i've got all the album art

My betales folder:

On my desktop I use

Artist\Album\ 01 - Track name.mp3

On my iHP-120 I use

Artist\Album\01 Track Name.mp3 so more of the song title will display on the screen without scrolling. I have a folders of single that are (Singles)\Artist - Track Name.mp3

i have a music hard drive then i sort it as follows

Artists A-Z\artists name\album name\then if needed i then have live versions of songs etc.

i also have a download folder, which i then move the music to the appropriate folder.

as for the filename i only use the track name and i put the artist name and album name etc. in the summary.

The way I've stuck to is:

D:/Music/<genre>/Artist - Album/Track - Artist - Title.mp3

<genre> is just a general thing:

- Rock, Alt, Indie

- Trance, Techno, Dance

- Rnb, Rap, etc

Someone above said the named files like: "Artist - Track - Title"

If it's a mixed CD though, then the artist differs for each song, and the track number is irrelevant.

I don't use any programs like Itunes or WMP for organising though, as, well, I like my system. :)

I use this setup with EAC

For a normal album from a single artist:

%D - (%Y) %C - %N - %T

For a compilation with various artists:

VA - %C - %N - %A - %T

For soundtracks, even with single composer:

OST - %C - %N - %A - %T

Mp3 structure

Mine is Catagory>Artist>Album>song , unless its a bunch of singles and misc crap which I'll just throw in a folder. I dont rely on mp3 tags or playlists though. Its not too efficient however, but I'm used to the way I organize things.

E:\Music\Compilations\VAs

E:\Music\Compilations\VAs\Tribute

E:\Music\Compilations\VAs\Rock And Alternative

E:\Music\Compilations\VAs\Punk And Emo

E:\Music\Compilations\Kerrang

E:\Music\Compilations\Punk o Rama

E:\Music\OSTS

Led Zeppelin - 02 - Led Zeppelin II

Led Zeppelin - 03 - Led Zeppelin III

I've got all my music like this:

E:\Oma musiikki\Artist\Album\track number with leading 0. Artist - Track title.mp3

example:

E:\Oma Musiikki\System Of a Down\Toxicity\12. System Of a Down - Toxicity.mp3

works very well and everything is in order :)

I also have a folder.jpg in every album folder to show the cover art :p

and oh, Oma musiikki is finnish, and it means own music in english :)

example:

My Music\KoRn\Issues\01-Dead.mp3

I thought of making it KoRn-01-Dead.mp3, but since i keep all my music collection well tagged, i dont reallz need that, and it would take a lot even with special software to rename it all...
