PDA, what should I get?

Recommended Posts

I'm a high school senior. I'm tired of taking some notes onto scraps of paper and misplacing them. I want to get a Palm handheld but don't know what to get? I plan to spend under $200. I was looking at the Visor Neo/Edge and the Sony Clie PEG-S320. What should I get? Also I need to make sure that the PDA is compatible with Win XP.

problem w/ visors is most of them are not flashable so you can't upgrade OS.

Clie are pretty good, don't remember exactly that model cuase they are so many of 'em...

i think Handera pdas have some interesting features.

wait till summer, some sweet pda's will be released by that time. even if you won't get new ones, everthing else will be cheaper.

I have an iPAQ and it is, in my opinion, the only way to go. However, you'll have a hard time getting one on the budget you stated. My second choice would probably be a Sony Clie. The jog feature alone is worth it.

I have used a Jornada 820e for taking notes at college for the past 2.5 years. I bought it on e-bay for a cheep price and have been very happy with it. I specifically picked out this device because of its keyboard, the 640x480 screen size, only weighing about 2 pounds (with battery), having a 10 hour battery life (without dimming screen), running familiar looking Windows CE software with pocket versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and Powerpoint. It also features a USB port and 56k modem; though the USB is only good for hooking up a mouse, and the 56k is dead slow for anything except e-mail. It hooks up easily to my WinXP computer. It comes with 32mb of internal memory plus one compact flash port and one PCMCIA II port for hooking up network cards (Wireless???). With it I was able to quickly take notes, compose e-mail anywhere I wanted and have it instantly sent when I hooked it to my computer. The battery life is increadible, and pocket office is more than handy since I use the calander, e-mail, task list and address book often, and it quickly updates information on both my computer and the PDA simply by plugging in a wire. Though the software is a tad dated, it is still useful for what I want, the 200Mhz processor is quick enough that I never have to wait to load applications. I would say that this is very handy for students because of it's flexability, though it is not much use past doing common wordprocessing tasks, tables, e-mail, etc. The downfall would be the stupid touchpad pointing device, it is both awkard and annoying. But a cheep $5 USB mouse (scroll wheen not supported) fixes this problem. If the screen had been a touch screen this would be an awesome device, but it works fine for me. I wouldnt trade it for one of HP's newer Jornadas with thier tiny screen and keyboards...

I hope that this helps...

All depends on how much storage you need.

In your price range the Sony would be an sound choice because of it's memory stick storage.

I personally own an iPaq and love it, but the price is prohibitive. Going after a Palm I would consider the m505 because of its use of SD storage, which is cheap and u can upgrade to hundreds of Megs, which might be more useful to you with college notes.

There are some other issues I would consider when buying a handheld for taking notes:

- Battery Life: Your lectures will go for an hour or two, time sthat by lectures per day.. Some of the better handhelds get 6-7 hours out of one charge. Palm OS based would be better on the juice.

- Backlight: I've used a Palm m100 for note taking and I can tell you it sucks. The green/black monocrome lighting is very hard to read by. How often will you be taking notes in a darkened room? If that is the norm, definitely look at handhelds with better backlighting. iPaq, Casiopea, Jordana

- Input methods: Grafiti is good, but unless you're an absolute pro, you will make mistakes. How important are the notes you're taking. Can you afford to be mucking about? Are there lots of mathematical formula? Try different imput methods before you buy! Look at the possiblity of getting a fold up keyboard that is available for most Palms, Handsprings or Pocket PC's. It will increase your accuracy in the long run.

Well that's my $0.02 worth.

Good luck!

I have a Visor Prism and love it. I looked at the rest and the visor was the only color model that was in my price range. Handspring has just dropped the prices on alot of their models and for expandability you can't beat a visor! IMO

Their software does work with XP, although I had to download it off of their website since the CD that came with the visor did not have the current version.

For note taking, if you don't like grafity, you should check out silkyboard from www.silkyboard.com...it rocks!

I don't have a PDA, but I recommend that you either use a Palm m125 or a Handspring Visor! Just as long as you don't useWindows CE/Microsoft Pocket PC! Just another drag to use, I find!

Last week i moved off my Palm V to a Toshiba Pocket PC, Palms are fine if you just want to make the odd short note or sort contacts and appointments, but i've been after mp3 players and pocket excell. Battery Life is much better on the palm range and if you plan on using it for lecture notes maybe a full size foldup keyboard would not go a miss! But at the moment i'm a converted Pocket PC fan :p (just a shame about batt life!)
