My idea's for Longhorn

Recommended Posts

I've got a few idea's for Longhorn I wanted to share with you guys. It's mostly eye-candy stuff and things that would come in a little handy, nothing much, but still...

??button imagesb> - things like little ticks next to OK buttons, and cross-out's next to cancel buttons. I've included an attached image to show what I mean.

more folders - things like My Downloads & My Webpages with unique icons to match.

more start menu links - have those My Downloads and My Webpages folders on he Start places section in the start menu, along with My Videos.

Does anyone else have any idea's to add? Cause I'm really interested.

How about a control panel item to turn on/off shell folders instead. things like My eBooks really **** me off because I simply don't and never will have any, but the folder keeps coming back.

IMHO more folders would mean better file organisation

Disagreed. I dont like those Windows folders. My pictures and music and **** like that. I even dont have my music on the same drive as Windows.

they should maintain the amount of memory used and try to keep it minimized when the program becomes inactive.

Windows NT used to do this, and it was painful when bringing huge apps back from memory.

I know what you mean, its really annoying.

To Fix: Delete the eBooks dll file in the adobe program files folder

thanks for the info, well, i hope with the new core components winfx and avalon and indigo, that probably will be looked upon and provided with a solution, til then, longhorn will probably be a very officer-friendly os.

i agree with you. I need a folder on the start menu for My Videos. Plus, the little bar on the side of the monitor is just a memory hog that no one would use!

About the more folders thing and chaotic file placing...

Why do you think are they doing WinFS? One reason is to realize such folders independently how you (dis)organize your file placing.

Glad someone managed to mention WinFS.

This is the whole idea of WinFS. No matter how you organise all your files in any particular part of the hard drive, WinFS will be able to index them correctly and provide better searching and access to them. This will also bring in better abilities for Microsoft to patch their operating systems. If WinFS is pulling files from a SQL database whenever it needs a file then replacing them on the fly will be ok aslong as the entry in the SQL database is changed too. Should be interesting.

Yeah it's one of the things I can't wait for since I have so many files that I organize one way but actually need to organize them by like 5 or more, lol. It'll help tons.

Also about the memory thing.

Why is there so little Free RAM?

Windows will always try to find some use for all of RAM ? even a trivial one. If nothing else it will retain code of programs in RAM after they exit, in case they are needed again. Anything left over will be used to cache further files ? just in case they are needed. But these uses will be dropped instantly should some other use come along. Thus there should rarely be any significant amount of RAM ?free?. That term is a misnomer ? it ought to be ?RAM for which Windows can currently find no possible use?. The adage is: ?Free RAM is wasted RAM?. Programs that purport to ?manage? or ?free up? RAM are pandering to a delusion that only such ?Free? RAM is available for fresh uses. That is not true, and these programs often result in reduced performance and may result in run-away growth of the page file.

I even dont have my music on the same drive as Windows.

That has nothing to do with anything. My stuff is not on my system drive either, but my special folders still point to the right folders. You need to redirect the folders, that's all.

I would like to see all the options more centralised and organised. A complete rethink is needed for all the option dialoges because at the moment (even though I know my self around this mess) many options have just been added on and it's a complete joke really. Clarity and simplification please! No bloat and less mess.

Sort out the registry, for Gods sake! Have some program that emulates it for legacy programs but doesn't slow your PC down.

Files, I want to be able to find my things smarter (WinFS?) Hopefully MS can deliver this.

I don't think more folders is a step forward, actually the reverse really, I want to see a new method of storing my files together that's smarter and more effective.

The way forward is virtual folders which WinFS is capable of.

As for the registry I don't think .Net apps need it so as we progress forward it will be there for legacy apps only.

I couldn't agree more... it definitely needs an overhaul! Is anything being done to update the way the registry works in Longhorn?

Oops... didn't read the next post

Let the user choose to replace the TaskBar with something more graphical. E.g. Instead of having buttons represent open windows/ applications, (the way the taskbar has traditionally worked) let the user choose to show grahpical representations of windows/ applications that are opened.

The "Start Menu" should be replaced with a "Start Panel" window. The user could move the "Start Panel" around the screen and it would operate more like Windows Explorer. When you press "Start" on the SideBar, the "Start Panel" would immedeatly appear just like the current start menu, except it would open in the center of the screen, or wherever it was when the user last closed it. On the side would be changeable items like "My Documents", "My Music", "Programs", or whatever else you want quick shortcuts to.

The SideBar, (not the Start Menu or Panel) should have the "Log Off" and "Shut Down" Options on it. My idea is that the "User Name" would appear somewhere (at the top?) of the SideBar. When the user clicks his/ her name, a "user options" menu appears with options like "Log Off", "Switch User", "Turn off Computer", "Start Panel Preferences", "Task Bar Preferences" "Display Properties" ect...

Just like you can in Windows XP, you could easily revert to the Classic Look (95/98/2000) GUI.

ewwww, the reason the start menu is right next to the start button is so you don't have to move your mouse half way across the screen to access it. Moving my cursor all teh way across the screen everytime I wanted to get to my documents would get real old real fast.
