questions baout electricity

Recommended Posts

I am supposted to explain this to my neighbor who is younger then me, and i forgot...

What is electricity and what is it made of?

What are some examples of electricity?

How can electricity be stored?

What are some dangers of electricity?

How can electricity be made by man?

How does electricity work? (such as how does a light bulb use it, or how does a vaccume cleaner use the electricity)

Electricity is the movement of electrons from atom to atom.

How about the mains? :p

It can be stored only by converting it to different types of energy, for example chemical (batteries), kinetic (flywheels) or magnetic (capacitators).

If you get to much of it, it damages your atoms by pulling off electrons - although it's more common to juust get burnt severely because of the sheer volume of energy that is flowing through you. I guess it could also short-circuit your brain, but I'm not sure.

Currently all electricty stations work by turning a turbine that is connected to a generator. This is done either by burning something (oil, coal, etc.) to heat water that produces steam that turns the turbines, or by using the power of nature like in wind farms and HEP dams.

Electricity 'works' in different ways, depending on what application it's being put to. In your example of a lightbulb the flow of electrivity is enough to make the tungsten filament glow brightly, producing light (but also a lot of wasted heat).

Hope that help! :)

I thought that Electricity was energy right so basically you cannot create or destroy energry just change it from one form to another.

but the bad thing about the burns you get from electricity is that they are usually internal. it will also fibrillate your heart.

how is it created (like natural ways)

Two dissimiar metals can cause a voltage potential (like in a battery, or the 'potato clock' science experiment).

Also friction like wool on plastic (or like air blowing causes static buildup and lightning).

If I'm not mistaken, Lightning happens when postively charged atoms gather in the atmosphere, and they gather a strong enough (+) charge to "even" themselves with the (-) atoms on the ground, so that after the "zap" occurs, all the atoms have however many electrons they require, thus being "even". But I dunno, knowing me I'm probably wrong.
