In responce to the warez thread, what do peeps think of software as a service?

Many peeps said they used wares as a trialing system before they brought the software - what if you only had to pay say $0.30 a week which included continual upgrades? Would you sign up for a weeks free trial and pay after that?

Corel use a Citrix Metaframe demo system (I can't remember the name of the 3rd party company) so that you can try their software over the web like. Its very similar to the Remote Desktop Protocol. That way, warez would also be much harder to organise because the software would never leave the server, and if it did getting updates for your copy would be hard.

Just my two cents.

No way Jose! There is no way in hell I will ever pay a dime for software period, lol. $100/month for dedicated sdsl line with 2 static IPs attached to nameservers just about does me in on the tech bills...Besides, you cant charge a credit card for $0.30 weekly. That's just gay...lol :D

Just a notion.

MS can do whatever they want but i hope apple never goes in this direction... when i buy an OS, i want it to be M I N E. as far as software goes - i think some companies and certain products will do this software as a service concept... i really don't care though, as long as the prices are fair and the delivery model makes sense. we won't see this for at least 5 more years, and even then it may be sketchy.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO !!!!!!

I really hate this idea of renting software. It has merits if we look at it from a UHaul perspective: Only going to use it once or twice so why pay for permanent ownership. But is that how software is used? I would argue not.

This is a much larger issue then it appears to be. As our economy shifts more and more toward a licensure based exchanged, the middle class will continue to dissapear and ownership [ie. power] will continue to be concentrated among the few.

Ackk ... thats not where you wanted to go, I'm sure of that.

Hop on the Open Source bandwagon & discover what true technology is all about. Software & Platforms were meant to be free in the first place. Buying all the damn hardware is hard enough for some folks...

I've never read an Apple EULA, but if its anything like 99% of other EULAs you don't own the software. You only buy the right to use it....

it wouldnt work out well since we're not made out of money u know lol, we cant spend like $10/month for mp3s if that would ever happen on napster since lots of those have tight enough budgets as is, n others wouldnt be able to afford paying so much per year on a program thats pay-per use app..

i wouldnt doubt it

i noe blackcomb is heading on this direction

in australia

telstra the biggest broadband provider is giving us **** like 65 dollars for 1 gigabyte a month and u get speeds like 100-200kilobytes and thats what they call uncapped and

its 300 $ a month for 10 gigs

and now microsoft in australia

is sueing telstra because of this

and demanding telstra to provide way faster internet at a very cheap rate

they said this is to help their future OS which i suspect blackcomb which is 100% fully .net integrated

and i heard loading office off their servers?..

that's very inane what happens if the server goes down or what so ever

so i believe subsciption based software cannot be done

unless its 100% error free

i dont think much users will migrate unless their is benefit to them which i think may not

it will cost users definately more time and money purchasing new system and paying for it every month

and learning so microsoft and telstra are both screwed heeh
