Firefox slow redraw?

Question

Hi there, I've recently switched to Firefox from Opera and to me Firefox seems extrememly slow!

Check out this DevArt page /!\ It is about nudity! But it was the longest thread I could find.

http://news.deviantart.com/article/14362/

(you need to be logged into devart to see that page at full length)

In Opera / IE, the page loads quickly with hardly any CPU usage but in Firefox the CPU usage stays at 100% for a long time and it's UI becomes very slow to use. Also trying to resize Firefox is a nightmare on most websites and scrolling up and down using the autoscroll (by clicking the middle button) is visually slower than Opera or IE too.

Is there a setting to change somewhere that will fix this?

Thanks

Andy :)

unfortunately I think thats a firefox thing, it happened to me a lot as well (using it as my primary browser for DeviantArt, it lags like hell on big pages).

The only fix I found was setting DevArt to only display 10 comments per page in my preferences :(

Im hoping it will be fixed in a future release.

^^ Did you log into Devart first? If not you will only see the first few comments, not 1000 or so that you get if you log in.

PS My specs are P4 2ghz with 512 mb of PC2100 RAM. No other apps are open.

OK that's wierd then. How about resizing windows? That is dog slow for me on Firefox.

BTW I also installed the Tabbrowser extension and the smoothscroll extension.

And I suppose have a system probably double the speed of mine will help! :D But the thing is, I was always told Firefox was supposed to be faster than IE even on old systems. :(

Edit: P4 2.8@3.5, 1gig 500mhz ram here. Latest Firefox nightly.

^^ With that much it should be a non-issue ... but this is not a standard config.

These things should be fixed in a Standard Browser

The latest trunk nightly builds have a few problems at the moment, one of them being related to your problem:

242856 - Slow image rendering. (Ttrunk, since 20040506)

This bug might be a 2-part problem (ie: two things broke recently that are slowing things down) - so either grab an older Trunk build, or get a branch build.

Firefox has been sped up since 0.8 final and the nightlies are coming up with about 60+ bugs fixed since then including 2 fixes which solve a few memory leaks. I'd say wait for 0.9 as its going to be significantly faster than 0.8, but here is another option, tweaking!

Put this file into your Firefox profile folder. (Where your cache, setting, etc, are.

The profile folder is at...

C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Application Data\Firefox\Profiles\default\XXXXXXX.slt

This is a tweak file that I have made myself. Read the readme before you use it.

EDIT: Making my own thread to distribute this. Go here.

^^ Would you be kind enough to point me to where I can download an older build? Mozilla.org is huge & I can't find it :(

What build/version are you using? Nightly? Final?

^^ I have no idea! I got it by clicking the installer link on the front page. Right now I am installing some of the other builds.

I haven't seen any problem with DevArt, & my system config is way behind yours fella! Celeron 1GHz, 512 MB SDRAM, ATi RADEON 9600. FireFox 0.8 here! Although there are a few anomalies apparent in FireFox but that is predominant in all Gecko Based browsers.

P.S. Why not use IE or Opera for DevArt if FireFox has problems wit' DevArt?

hornett: do Help > About and you should have a user agent string like

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040507 Firefox/0.8.0+ (Lohvarn)
