after 224 there isn't a noticable different. Don't give me that bs about how you can't tell. The difference between any birate. There is.

I always and only get 192 and up. Nothing lower.

if you want to encode higher than 320kbps, you shouldn't look at mp3. look at a lossless coded like SHN or Monkey's Audio. they encode as much as possible without losing any of the original sound quality, and the result is ususally around 600-700kbps.

instinguishable to the human ear? hehe. i can tell the difference between 256 and 320 mp3. especially in low end ranges. anyways...

if you want pure quality (lossless) do what the guys have been saying and use Monkey Audio (.ape) or another lossless encoder.

if you want to conserve file size but also want higher quality than mp3 you might want to consider Musepack (formerly MPEGplus). a Musepack file of the same file size as a 128 mp3 has the quality of a 256 mp3 (my friend did actual sound analysis tests for this fact). plus you get the bonus of full range frequency encoding (mp3 cuts off below 20 Hz and above 22 KHz i believe) and no artifacting or distortion. it's pretty cool but not that popular yet. the files are playable through a winamp plugin so you don't have to run out and d/l another useless program. you can goto www.musepack.net to get the files you need to encode/decode and playback if you're interested.

Has anybody here heard about .SHN files????

I collect Pink Floyd Bootlegs and I only have mp3's but the other guys download .shn boots, and they say that they are a lot better.

Don't know anything about them. I know a lot of people have them on Direct Connect and mIRC.

Frod: Wow, you must have one of those few gifted pair of ears. That or you crank your music up so high that you HAVE to hear the differences at such high bitrate.

Personally, I can't tell the bitrate of the file if it's anything above 192kps cranked at acceptable decibel rate.

i belive mpeg1 layer3 spec is 320kbit max

there are some music test samples which have artifacts even when encoded HQ320kbit.

on the other hand, saying everything below 192 is **** is a bit silly. if your music is very quiet or alot of simple to encode sound forcing it to >192kbit is pointless and inefficient.
