Slimy
i wonder if people are going to start converting to higher and higher bit rates
ring0
i still see most things in 128, but i prefer to go with a high-rate variable rip or just straight 320 if i'm in a rush
TrickFinlay2
128 would probably be most common, tho i like at least 192 or VBR
chacho
128 is definitely the most common, but i prefer 192-256 or VBR. 320 would take up too much space with the amount of music i have.
IceDogg
This is a little off topic..sorry.. but what is the Highest rate possible?

Bearded Kirklander
Most people I know use 192 bit Constant for their MP3's. I use 160 bit constant with Fast Fraunhofer in Music Match 7.5. I can hardly tell the difference between 160 and 192 with that codec. I believe 320 bit constant is the highest possible with normal MP3.
Apollo
128 is the "king" for sure, probably because of the smaller size but 192 is catching up with faster and faster internet connections becoming available

krmathis
Apple Lossless (variable bitrate, normally 700-900Kbps)! (Y)
insanekiwi
vbr  losless encoding is dumb. eats up so much space you can use the audio cd instead
kagaku
q7 Ogg Vorbis. Produces files that are around 12mb a piece on average, and sounds as good as any lossless codec in my opinion. Anything lower should be a crime.
nexx
192kbps VBR LAME  Would make the switch to Ogg Vorbis if only my portable media supported it :(

kagaku
192kbps VBR LAME  Would make the switch to Ogg Vorbis if only my portable media supported it :( Grab a Rio Karma. It plays all of my Ogg Vorbis and FLAC files right out of the box.
Bearded Kirklander
Grab a Rio Karma. It plays all of my Ogg Vorbis and FLAC files right out of the box. I still don't have a typical MP3 player. I have one of those $29 CD-RW walkman type players where you burn your MP3's to a CD-R or CD-RW and put the disk into the player and listen that way. Yes, it is a bit bulky by comparison, but it gets great battery life, uses standard AA batteries that are cheap to replace, and only costs me $29. That's not so bad, is it?
