The Ultimate Gaming PC

Recommended Posts

OK. I've put some thought into this, and i'm finally getting a new PC, and I want it to be great for games, but also easily upgradable, so here's what i'm thinking about getting:

Motherboard: Asus P4S333 P4 SiS 645 Chipset (DDR) ATX

Processor: Intel P4 2.2 Ghz 512k PGA 478pin 400FSB

Cooling Fans: TGF 020 Blue Orb Chip Cooler, ThermalTake Dragon Orb 478 with Speed Control Switch and 2 80mm Enermax Adjustable Fans

Power Supply: EG301P-VE 300 Watt Power Supply

Sound Card: Sound Blaster Live Platinum 5.1 with Remote Control

Video Card: 64MB 4X AGP DDR GeForce4 MX TV/out NV70

Memory: 256 MB DDR 266 PC2700

Case: Zeus Silver Mid-Tower ATX

Hard Drive: Western Digital U100 100GB 7200rpm

Extra Stuff:

High Voltage Applique

Nice Little Fan Light

This'll be a BIG upgrade compared to my crappy little 566Mhz i'm running now. I'm really excited.

If anyone can think of any extra upgrades I should get, just make a post before I place the order.

Well... How much ram u getting inside?

And I personally think that if you realy want some real processing power... U should put in an AMD processor in it... (Or go all out with two AMD MP 1900+... :))

I agree. And I would ditch getting the GF4 MX. Just spring for one in the Ti Series. Much better :D

I'm hoping to be buying more, but for starters, i'm going with 256MB DDR of PC2700.

I'm sorta trying to keep with Intel for the processor since I have some stock in Intel and not in AMD.

The Ti's are sorta expensive for me cuz i'm trying to keep the price below $1500, but i'll look for some reviews and places to get em online at reasonable prices. After all, with a little job that gives me about $60 a month, I can't get everything. And, i'm only 16 and I gotta buy my own car, since my nice parents won't. Sometimes I hate em, and now is when i really do.

Ditch the intel stocks... They are gonna sink anyways :D

For now 256 is all right... but if u intend to get winXP on it well... go for at least 128 more... Oh and... I would go for RDRAM memory... its almost twice the price but it runs at 400MHz instead of 333MHz so you make full use of your FSB

Yes i must agree :)

btw, your getting an awful bad case for such a nice setup.. get a lian-li or coolermaster case, as well as 512 ram instead of 256 and your set :)

also.. ditch the gf4mx. . a geforce 3 ti is even better..

Dell's as well as all other brand name computers such as compaq, dell,hp suck. There motherboards are pure crap, and include not a BIOS.. but somthing what you would see as a customized bios, with nothing good on it. only problems. never get a brand name computer- dosnt matter if it costs you less [which it NEVER will!], they are always pure crap.

Hey... 4get the first part... wrong post :x

I totaly agree that Compaq, HP are a total piece of sh** but Dell computers are somewhat better than that... At least thats what I think... of course its no homemade self built PC but they are good computers... The only brand name PC I'd get on a budget (Unless maybe Alienware or Falcon northwest :D but then again thats no budget computers...)

GF4 MX? The GeForce4 MX use the NV17 chip while the Ti versions use the NV25 chip

GeForce2(all versions) - NV15

GeForce3(all versions) - NV20

GeForce4 MX - NV17

GeForce4 Ti - NV25

I have also seen some benchmark on the GeForce4 MX, they don't look good, the GF3 Ti 500 performs even better...

Define "real processing power"...

Real Processing power = AMD. But anyway I would like to add my two cents. I would like to suggest going to www.ibuypower.com. They have some really nice systems for fairly cheap. I got mine last summer for around $1500. The only thing I've changed is a couple of fans. I'm saying to give them a look and see if you can get what you want for fairly cheap. One thing that is really nice about them is that if you get it with the OS installed they don't go in and install a much of extra crap. I worked on my uncles new last weekend and had to try to stop all the dell apps from loading with windows. All they do is use up resources and they have no legitamate function. If you want to stick with what you have I would suggest changing the vid card. The geforce 4 mx sucks. Either get a geforce 3 or a 4 Ti 2100. Good luck and happy gaming.

Whats some of you guys problem with having a Pentium 4 processor? Using high speed DDR memory (PC2700 and up) they are quite overclockable and the main thing is they run a hell of a lot cooler using a much slower and quieter cpu fan. I would probably get an Athlon XP 2000+ myself if I didnt have to have a 7000 or 8000rpm CPU fan sounding like a 747 to cool the thing so i've opted for a P4 1.8A or 1.9A, using the stock heatsink and fan (3000rpm) and doing a bit of overclocking when i upgrade in a month or so.

If some of you guys have suggestions on how to cool an Athlon XP system quietly maybe you can change my mind, and others too :D

When comparing the performance of Pentium 4 processors, the choice of platforms is almost as important as the CPU itself. The i850/RDRAM system performed exceptionally and leaves little doubt that Intel now has the highest performing CPU/platform on the market. Where the Pentium 4-2.4 GHZ really impresses is in its ability to elevate the performance of the i845D as well, and surpass the nForce-powered Athlon XP 2100+ in the majority of benchmarks. This is where the real Intel victory comes, as Intel DDR performance systems have now become much more competitive.

I was thinking of buying that amd chip but then I saw all the reviews on how much better this p4 2.4 is. It does cost alot more but if you want the top product, then you have to pay for it. I still like amd, but until they come out with a new chip to beat intel down for awhile, im going to have to buy the intel chip.

btw check out this review if you havent already http://gamespot.com/gshw/stories/flat/0,12...2859753,00.html

My MSI nForce system w/ a AMD 1700+ (NOT Oc'd!!!) is performing anywhere from 45-67 point HIGHER in SiSoft Sandra 2002 than an Intel P4 2GHZ..... Explain that!!! :)

For as far as u r interested in my opinion (but since I work in a computer store, I just can't NOT answer), i would go for rambus memory, otherwise it's just a waste of P4 power. About the CPU, I would leave it as it is, P4 is very well overclockable (one of the guys has a P4 1.8GHz, running @ 3.0GHz :D), as long as you just make sure u have enough cooling.
