Everyone knew they were working on something and it was very Doom III-like, now it's confirmed. Great. It WILL be a lot more revolutionary than Quake 3!

re: system reqs:

put it this way, the first showed it off on a mac, so i think any pc with a recent (ie geforce 2 or > ) graphics card and processor should be fine

Carmack said that if you wanted to get a video card for doom 3 you shouldnt get a geforce 4 because it's not really ready for doom 3. he said you could better wait for the next generation of nvidia card, and buy when doom 3 comes out

Not to discredit you, but I believe he said don't buy a GeForce 4 MX, because of the inherent differences between it and a true GeForce Ti card. The MX uses a GPU that's not the same as other true Ti cards, and as such also has a slower clock cycle and video memory. The MX nVidia screwed up on and his statement tried to reflect the problems a MX would have that a GeForce Ti 4200, 4300 and 4400+ would not have.

d3 has many render paths. the gf4mx uses the same one as ither the gf2 or tnt2 (more likely gf2).. ne hows d3 was originall developed for the gf2 but JC said it would change because the gf2 was the best g-card out at that time.

More then likly to get the full graphics outa d3 u will need a 1ghz + gf3 TI500 class

Well .... someone find the link to Carmack's own word please. I'm thinking of a new vid card now and this is a VERY important consideration. I know he tagged the ATI 8500 as having issues but I havent heard him go on about the GF4 [or GF3].

This game is gonna rock !!! [it better not be as short as RTCW - I would have to travel to their main office and urinate on the front door if it is:evil: ]

In Carmack's plan, he said if you want to play Doom III, don't buy a GeForce 4 MX card, because they don't have the advanced features that the GeForce 4 ti series has.. Like Vertex and Pixel Shaders.. He said the GF4 MX is gonna use the same rendering engine that the GeForce 2 is going to use..

He's also mentioned in previews .plan's and interviews, that if you want to play Doom III in all it's glory, you need at least a GeForce 3.. I doubt that's changed by now. Considering the ratio of people that own GeForce 3 / 4 cards, and GeForce 2 and below.

interview:

http://www.voodooextreme.com/games/intervi.../carmack/2.html

extract:

The ideal card for DOOM hasn't shipped yet, but there are a couple good candidates just over the horizon. The existing cards stack up like this:

Nvidia GeForce[2]: We are using these as our primary development platform. I play some tricks with the register combiners to get a bit better quality than would be possible with a generic dual texture accelerator.

ATI Radeon: All features work properly, but I needed to disable some things in the driver. I will be working with ATI to make sure everything works as well as possible. The third texture unit will allow the general lighting path to operate a bit more efficiently than on a GeForce. Lacking the extra math of the register combiners, the specular highlights don't look as good as on a GeForce.

3DFX Voodoo4/5, S3 Savage4/2000, Matrox G400/450, ATI Rage128, Nvidia TNT[2]: Much of the visual lushness will be missing due to the lack of bump mapping, but the game won't have any gaping holes. Most of these except the V5 probably won't have enough fill-rate to be very enjoyable.

3DFX Voodoo3, S3 Savage3D/MX, Matrox G200, etc: Without a stencil buffer, much of the core capabilities of the renderer are just lost. The game will probably run, but it won't be anything like we intend it to be viewed. Almost certainly not enough fill rate.
