Just so you know, that either required a hugely modded inside of the cube, or a modded burner. Normal burners (even ones that can do mini-discs) cannot burn a GCN game, because they (GCN games) are burned backwards, from the outside in, instead of the inside out. So either that video is completely fake (wouldn't be that hard to do) or he was hiding the most important part with his modified burner or inside of his cube. Casual piracy will never happen on the GCN, and thats what Nintendo wanted to stop. As it has been proven again and again, the "career" pirates are unstoppable. The casual pirates are not.

Edit: If you think that Wave Race sucks... you obviously don't have the skill to play the game. Wave Race: Blue Storm has the most realistic physics of any game I have ever touched.

Edit #2: And an attachment to one of the GCN's ports on the bottom for pirating purposes was made a few weeks after the Japanese release of the console. But once again, casual pirates can't//won't do anything like that.

It will happen, give it time. Everything can be modded, just the time it takes to do it. If companies realize that if they used some other type of media besides CDs, it wouldn't happen. Like if all games were put on say batteries people wouldn't pirate them, it would be unthinkable to even try to load a game onto a battery for almost anyone. If they would put some actual thinking in their games and give you something for the money. I mean $80 for a game is outrageous, thats why people do it. If the game wasn't on CD media, if it was like a battery, that was unable to purchase, and loaded into the console in such a fashion no one could load it onto any other state and play it, Piracy would be stopped.

Just my 2 cents worth, eventaully you won't have games, you will rent them off the internet.. but until then..

heh, all i can say is HAHAHA :D

and episode everything is hackable, so like Ruciz said give it some time :) and it'll be easily modded

I reckon the only way you can properly stop piracy is to make games so ridiculously cheap that no one will bother to try and copy them cus there would be no point. If ya priced em at sy ?10 whats ?10 to people, it nothing. Id go and buy say Halo, when its out, for ?10 on PC. I wouldnt even bother to download it off the net even if i had a 2Mbit connection. Cus whats the point. You have a proper CD, box manuals, etc. plus its resaleable and are more likely to recieve more money back than if you just had some copied CD like.

LOL!

This is so fake. He didn't burn that game because mini-disc can only hold like 128mb of data, 20-25min of music. I'm a little fuzzy on the specs. A GC mini disc can hold..what..1.5gigs of info?

1.5gig can not fit on a 128mb disc.

All he did was slap a CD label on the actual, legal Waveracer game, pop it into his burner, hit the eject button, hit rec on his camera ,and then poped the game into his GC..

FAKE!

This almost look convincing. Except the fact that I find the under of that recordable media very strange, and very pressed-like.

I have mini cd-rs and yet they don't look anything close to that.

And besides, there's not enough room on a mini cd-r.

What media was that, if it WAS true?

Believe it or not, XBox games are also made so that the data is read backwards, from the outside in, but with XBox, you have two layers also (since it is a DVD9 disc), so each layer is burned outside in.

Now, XBox games have already been copied, so that means that the outside in thing has been cracked. If it was done for XBox, it can be done for GameCube. By the way, did you know that there is such a thing as mini-Recordable DVD? I believe I have heard of them. A GameCube game can easily be burned on one of them.

This proves that no matter what companies do to try to prevent copying of games or software, there will always be people working on cracking it. With time, they do succeed. It angers me that this was done on two consoles that were thought to be uncrackable, but I guess nothing is uncrackable. :(

Like I said, yes it is possible.

But the casual pirate won't be able to do it. They can't make//buy a backwards writing DVD drive, or mini-dvd drive for that matter. I never said it was uncrackable. I said that casual pirates (like the ones that copy games on PS1 and PS2) will not be able to pirate GameCube games.

XBox games are not written backwards. Backwards burned games require a backwards moving laser. But since Xbox plays DVDs, it has to move forward. The laser can't move both ways.

No, XBox games are written backwards. Here is a quote from a page from this article at Tom's Hardware:

The games are stored on DVD, probably DVD-9 exclusively. These will be single-sided, double-layered DVDs with a capacity of 9 GB. Games seem to be written from the outside of the disk to the inside, which is very uncommon. Probably, the main reason is to prevent pirating. But it also allows the DVD drive to use a Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) to read most data on the outermost tracks in a much faster way.

The DVD player is a 5x CAV, which reduces the speed to 2x for data on the most inner tracks. For games, the drive will mostly be reading at 5x, or 6250 Kb/s, which is great. The PS2 DVD player is a 4x CAV with an inner track speed of 1-2x.

Also, here is a quote from this Anandtech review of the XBox:
The Xbox marks Microsoft's entry into the living room; a place normally reserved for TVs, VCRs and not computers. With the NV2A able to handle DVD output and the 733MHz processor more than fast enough to perform the majority of the MPEG-2 decoding, it's no wonder that the Xbox ships with DVD playback support. The Xbox games themselves are stored on DVD-9 (9GB single sided, double layer) formatted discs and are actually written in a very interesting fashion. The games are written from the outside of the DVD-9 discs to the inside, meaning that most discs will actually have the majority of their data stored around the outer perimeter of the disc. Since the DVD drive in the Xbox is a Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) drive, it can read more data per second off of the outermost tracks making this a highly optimized way of storing data on the DVDs to reduce load times. Obviously the drive can also read regular CDs and DVDs as well.

I believe those are two quite reliable sources that say that the XBox's games are written and read backwards (from outside to inside).

True. Any method of preventing piracy can be cracked. Crackers/modders are always one step ahead of manufacturers.

it is posible to burn a cd from the outside in, you just can't use Roxio to burn it :p . they must use direct packet writing software that writes only that which is in the file, such as a cue and bin set. the bin is the data and the cue tells the burner how and where to burn it. the data could be reversed causeing the end of the cd to be burned first and the beginning burned at the end at the outer edge of the cd. along with actually copying these dvds, they must use cracked DVD drivers or software to directly control the lazer and read the data bit by bit from the dvd.
