Recommended Posts

my HDTV-monitor and DVD player are connected with component

I've recently went from component cables to DVI, and honestly, it's not that noticable of a diffrence. I have a 56" JVC HiDef widescreen. I must admit, I do notice slightly better image quality on my hidef channels tho, but overall, I'd have to say it's marginal.

You really are going to have to experiment. Some devices do digital output better than others and on those devices, the hdmi will definitely look better. All in all, the different, mostly, will be minimal, but, you do tget the advantage of one wire instead of 5.

HDMI is a variant of DVI. So id say HDMI would give u a more clearer and sharper (digital) image than componant which is analog.

Second advantage is HDCP if content providers decide to downrez HD programming on component but I don't see that ever becoming a problem. But as new HD recording options come around have HDMI with HDCP will allow you to actually record something.

Bottom line is don't worry much about what I said because these issues are more about political bullcrap than anything. But ya have to admit that is is an advantage of HDMI if it ever comes to play.

i'm using component now and i did have HDMI (to test it out, hell no not paying $120 for a cable! LOL Damn Monster Cables) and to tell tha truth i don't see a diff between HDMI and Component. I have a Mitsubishi WS-48413 and this thing rox. I'll just be getting an HDMI cable from monoprice for cheap and using that instead since i definitely rather the 1 cable look. With my optical cables (xbox and hd dvr box) component (DVD) and subwoofer cable plus the other smaller 6 speaker cables (6.1 surrounds) then the mess of power cords i'm starting to hate cables! I wish everything could be wireless now!

All HDMI does is keep the signal in the digital domain, it can also carry 5.1 audio on the same cable if you have a tv or reciever that can use it.

Also right now the difference on MOST Tv's is not noticable.

I've got a question...will HDMI be enough to transmit the 13.1 channel audio format that HD-DVD will have? I'm guessing its going to be downconverted to 5.1 for older receivers or require a seperate cable?

13.1? Where the hell did you read that? Not eve theatres have that i don't think and it's almost not needed. The simple fact that the human brain likes to filter out stuff most of those channels will be lost on the average.. I thought HD-DVD was gonna be more like 7.1.

And for your question, i think HDMI cables could just because of the 1GB/s bandwidth but who knows... the picture signal prolly sucks up most of that now anyways. But a optical cable and a HDMI should be able to hand that no problem i think

HD-DVD will be capable of gong UP TO 13.1 but definitely won't start at that. The cool thing about the Dolby codec it will use is that the audio is upsampled drastically. It will stream at 6mbps from the current 640kbps. That's awesome.

As for the cable, I don't know if it has the bandwidth required for both the audio and HD video.
