Excel "File in Use" not showing.

Question

Hello

At my work (Canon) I noticed a slight problem with Excel, a group of people (5-10) use the same excel file, which they update from time to time. When one person opens the file, and then another person tried to open the file, there should be a "File in Use" message showing, with options Read-only and Notify. Well the problem is that not every person gets that message. To be specific 4 people never get that message. How can this be fixed, so every one would get File in Use message.

Btw some computers are windows 2000 with Excel 2000 sp3, and some are Windows xp with Excel 2002 Sp3.

Note: problem is not system specific, few 2000 and few xp are affected.

Thanks

Odd that some see the message and not others...

I take it that this is not a shared workbook.

Is it always the same four users that don't see it - do they never see it or only sometimes?

Sorry... One more question! Do they gain access to write to the file or is it read only mode just without a warning?

I have looked through the options for both Excel versions and there is nothing to supress the message so maybe it is to do with their individual permissions on the file... Try reseting these to the same as a user who does receive the warning (do one at a time).

Did you try resetting their permissions for these files?

If this doesn't work then the file must be corrupt in some way - still odd that it doesn't affect everyone though!

Try creating a copy of the book by copying the sheets (right click on one of the sheet tabs, select all sheets, right click on one of the sheet tabs again, Move or copy, create copy [tick box] in new book [drop down]). Save the file and give it a go...

If this doesn't work then I have no idea...
