NeoBond etc., disable the guest accounts! That'll free up some resources!

Also, how about deleting accounts that have been inactive for longer than 30/50 days?

i don't think freeing the guests is a good idea but for sure delete the inactive accounts for at least 60 days!

Ah just compact the tables, should be nuff.

i've gone through them all. they've all been optmized (there is not true compact table command under mysql)

and we're not going to turn off guests, becuase we will no longer grow... it's a double edged sword really...

no we don't, we have .46 and the latest is .51.

i'm goign to see about getting shell access for myself so I can a) upgrade mysqld, and b) compile it on our server so I'm sure we have the optimal settings to run under...

Yeah... You should email (as a curtesy, not a spam or annoyance) anyone who didn't come here for over 3 months.

Just ask them if they are still interested to come back, if not their account will be deleted.

And you tell them why (because server is down too much)

Sometimes, people too busy with life forget about places they visited and they also don't want to be erased.

Yeah we dont need Guest's :cheeky:

How do you think "Guest's" became members? I'm sorry but we can disable everything and become a crap site too if you want.

I think disabling guests is a bad idea, as well as disabling old accounts. It basically gives the "Post or be deleted" attitude. People don't like that. Anyway inactive accounts aren't causing the problem, it's actually active accounts cause it is to do with the server load, i.e. the number of users who are logged in and using the board increase the server load

It's not the size of the database that's the problem here , mysql databases can be gigabytes before they slow down (ours is less than 250Mb) . It's the number of hits on the server (sql and http)
