Another Australian caught with drugs in Bali

Recommended Posts

An Australian model allegedly found with ecstasy during a Bali police dance club sweep would probably face several months in jail if convicted, even though the maximum penalty is 10 years, Indonesian police sources and legal experts said.

Michelle Leslie, 24, was among a group of five people picked up in the early hours of Saturday morning during a raid on a dance party at Kuta's GWK Cultural Park, where the Bali bomb commemoration was held in 2003.

She is alleged to have had one or two ecstasy tablets in her possession.

Police netted 15 ecstasy tablets in the raids and arrested four others -  Indonesians aged 26 to 35.

Tests on the drugs were being conducted today.

OK.

(1) wtf @ 'one or two', how can they not be sure

(2) wtf @ 10 years/several months

(3) wtf @ Australians who keep going back to Bali even though Indonesia is pretty much the worst country of all time

What an idiot for doing drugs even after all the coverage of the Bali Nine and Shapelle Corby, but give me a break, Indonesia.

'Police netted 15 ecstasy tablets'

Woooo, so was it really worth it? Probably cost them more paying the police overtime than they could get from selling that E on the market.

Given the Shapelle Corby example, why would you go anywhere near Indonesia if you were a party girl/guy?

probably because of the cheap drugs

It instills the fear in people that the Police could raid at any given time. So people don't want it anymore. But alas, people are still stupid enough to get it.

I can't help but wonder if Australians are being specifically targetted by Indonesian authorities. It seems a little too convenient that so many arrests are being declared. All of which just so happen to be Australian. I would have thought the raw deal Miss Corby received would have at-least served as a wake up to anyone considering smuggling drugs either into or out of the country.

How is it that the Bali Bomber, a man responsible for multiple deaths receives a minor sentence of just 2 years, while Schappele Corby gets 20 years for a crime she almost assuredly is innocent of?

You can hardly call that justice. The entire matter just smacks of corruption. It is no surprise then, that their "laws" are being so widely criticized.

Well, that's always better than Saudi Arabia where she'd have had her head cut off.

Pretty stupid to buy drugs in a zero tolerance country tbh. As you said the cops must have loved to have found a reason to get another Australian.

Strange practice of justice or injustice. Took Indo off the list of places to visit in my lifetime.

Well bugger it, really if your an intelligent person and after all this still want to have anything to do with drugs in indonesia or bali then your pretty much asking for it.

I actually support it, maybe not 10 years for 1 pill but its widely agreeable that drugs produce negative externalities and are generally alround bad and we complain about drugs in Australia well that part of the world has more drug/terrorist problems then here, so if it takes hefty penalities to get the message across then so be it.

yes theres contradictions between the drugs/terrorism but to a lesser extent our legal system has contradictions; was it two years ago now, a person got 50 years for Rape thats out of proportion with murder now isnt it? Yes that was an exteme lesser extent, but in a country like that, they fight the fights they can win. And terrorism over there with their culture isnt quite the outrageous abhomination that it is here.

Even so, why would she even think of going to Indonesia?

Very smart move on her part.
