bmw oil change pricing?

Recommended Posts

i heard that it cost a lot of money to change the oil for bmw cars, about $300. does anyone here owns a bmw and know this information? much does it typically cost and how often do you have to change the oil? i know they have 4yrs or 50,000 free maintence but time do fly by quickly.

if it costs 200-300$ to change your oil, you're being ripped off. Find a jiffy lube or another generic auto repair place and they will change your oil for you for 20$.

I don't think the $250 is just for an oil change, I'm sure they must do something else. Its when the car gives you a warning that a service is due. On my car I have 5 green blocks on the console and as I use the car they stop showing up one by one, once I run out of them I'm supposed to take the car in for service and that's when they'll charge the $200-250.

Agreed. $20 is for the oil change. The other $230 must be for other things (engine/emission tests, tire rotations, etc..)

Unless you are putting in very cheap oil, no way will you do an oil change for $20 or even $50...

Especially in a V8 BMW like the 540i, which holds 7.5l of oil. You should be using fully synthenic Castrol or similar. Which would probably be about $100 on it's own...

Using cheap oil will seriously reduce the life of the engine.

ill tell ya how you change ur oil.

get ur car on some jack or wheel ramp so it looks like this \ the left being the front, right being the back. now get urself a nice drainage pan for the oil, and u see the cylinder shaped thing that looks like a oil filter, remove that, and let the oil drain out for a good 5 or 10 mins, to make sure its all gone. then get your new oil filter, follow the directions on the box on how to put it back on ( it screws on easily :D) and then put more oil in your engine. walla, a 15 minute job done for the price of the oil and filter.

fo20, you should never drain the oil using the oil filter...

You use the sump plug, which is at the lowest point of the sump, therefore removing ALL the oil and crud in the sump.

Also, in most BMW's, you have a plug in filter, which is off to the side of the engine, not below it, so, you'll never drain the engine that way...

You should also try and keep the car as level as possible when changing the oil.

almost or all bmw's have some sort of service light indicator telling you when its time for service. over the years we've had an X5, few 7's, 545, 325, even a Mini that works the same way. when it is time for service (which you pay after the 4 years free maintenance is up), its around 200-300 for a range of work, not just an oil change. from what i've seen, bmw always uses Castrol synthetic.

No crap, really? :D I meant $50 for the labor on mine; I buy my own oil and bring it to him. Mobile 1 Synthetic usually, $75 or so with filter, etc. And the $50 labor includes him checking and filling all the other fluids and giving the car a once-over for any other major problems. I do it every 10k miles. Pretty good deal.

it is definitely not just an oil change. BMWs have regular tune up services--if you buy new or certified you get this included for free. i just got my maintenance done (which includes an oil change if it needs one) for 400. it includes a lot more than an oil change they do brake fluid, transmission tests, yaddah yaddah. my car ran beautifully after it. not that it wasn't before but somehow it feels a lot livelier. and this is only done every 30k or so. first time was free. second i had a diff warranty so i paid for it. so 400$ for three years of a great running car (since the last one) is not a bad deal.

Just had the oil done on my 325ES from the stealer (dealer) and they charged me $65.

Normaly do it myself, but was feeling realy lazy that day :D

If they are charging you that much they are probly doing other crap.

Hell i got charged $200 to do my timing belt, and that requires a hell of alot more work than draining oil and replacing the filter.

Somthing is for sure fishy with that.

You people are paying CRAZY prices!!!

And for your information every dealer makes more money in the service department then on the actually sales floor... surprise!!!

Do it your self or take it to JIFFY and bring your own oil, if you think just cause you have a BMW you need take to the dealer to make it perfect then you are DEAD wrong makes no sense to pay all that mark-up just to say i get my oil done so and so....

get bent peoples

**EDIT**

you can get the service and oil done for 14.99 if done correctly at dealer! and thats still making money... so lets sasy 9.99 for paying tech and supplies... 65? damn 55USD mark up for the dealer to do it WHOO!

All e30's (sept maybe the 318's) had timing belts. They are a common problem... because when they break.. there goes your valves and your pistons 99% of the time.

Check e30tech.com out.

I don't change the oil in my mustang by myself anymore due to the fines the town gives you for spilling oil in the street. (Yes even if you don't spill it) But i have only ever used Mobil 1 in my car and you can buy a case of it (6 US QTs) for $23 at BJ's Sams, Costco's. Then I go buy a real Ford FL820S filter from the Pep Boys for like $3. Then go over to the guy who does $12 oil changes and have them do it but use my own oil and filter. And it costs $48 and pretty much every 6th oil change is free since the Stang only uses 5QTs in the oil pan. And to boot with synthetic you can go longer with the oil in the car so i go every 5000 miles between oil changes. Maybe because my dad and all my uncles were mechanics i feel more comfortable around cars but don't let the dealer scare you or hype you into paying out big bucks for anything. i had the car at the dealer for brakes cause ihad a coupon and wanted OEM Parts and they were like how about a free set of new wipers, i was like OK. then there was this mysterious $40 charge for wipers, i was like whats this? The service managers is like we had to bill you 1/2 hour of labor to put on new wiper blades? I was like i am not paying it, go out ther and pull them off, i can go buy Bosch microblade wipers with the new arms for half that price and take the 30 seconds to put them on. They removed the charge and left the wipers on. Don't trust the dealers and scrutinize everything they do.
