Baghdad Bridge Mad Dash

Over 640 Shiite Muslim pilgrims were killed while rushing on a bridge spanning the Tigris River in north Baghdad today frightened by an attack by insurgents on a nearby mosque, according to Iraqi National Assembly adviser George Sada.

The Shiite Muslim pilgrims crossing a bridge over the Tigris River were frightened by the rumors of a terrorist attack on a nearby mosque and started running to save their lives. Most of them even thought a suicide bomber could have been on the bridge and rushed toward the bridge to get out of the area, in panic.

At least 841 people were killed and 323 others injured in the deadliest incidentsince the US-led forces launched attacks on Iraq in March 2003

?There were so many people on the bridge that many

fell over its sides and drowned in the Tigris, others were crushed?, Iraqi National Assembly adviser George Sada said. Apparently, huge crowds converged from both ends, some leaving the mosque attacked by mortars and others making their way there.

Over 800 of the 3 million pilgrims who massed in the Khadimiya neighborhood for an annual ceremony commemorating the death of Musa al-Khadhim, are reported to have died in the tragic incident. Sky News, citing the Health Ministry, reported that as many as 1,000 people may have been killed. (Bloomberg)

:o Holy cow! It's terrible that the Iraqis still have to live in fear from the insurgents. Oh, this must be America's fault.

One thing about the article that doesn't make sense:

Most of them even thought a suicide bomber could have been on the bridge and rushed toward the bridge to get out of the area, in panic.

So basically, "There might be a suicide bomber on the bridge. Let's rush toward it!"

When there is mass panic no one realises about wheter they may be headed into danger, some dude starts to run while screaming and 10 more people join in and so the chain reaction starts.
