60 feared dead in Indonesian plane crash

Monday, September 5, 2005 Updated at 12:31 AM EDT

Associated Press

Jakarta — An Indonesian jetliner crashed in a residential neighborhood in the city of Medan shortly after takeoff Monday and burst into flames, killing at least 60 people, a doctor said.

Syahrial Anas, a doctor who was overseeing the removal of bodies at the crash site, said at least 60 people were killed. The country's transport minister said 109 people were on board the plane.

"We're having a hard time getting to the bodies, because of the heat," Dr. Anas told the Associated Press.

The airport in Medan, the largest city on Sumatra island, is close to the center of town and surrounded by densely populated residential areas.

Actually, there have been 9 fatal accidents in the US in the past week: http://www.faa.gov/data_statistics/acciden...eliminary_data/

Accidents happen all the time, just not normally with larger planes.

Why did you write 120 in the topic, when the article you posted says "at least 60" were killed and there were "109 people" onboard ?

586480227[/snapback]

^^ because the tv stations here are getting updates faster than that news page,

In the news channels they are already saying that ALL passengers died = 109 plus + 8 people from cabin crew = 117 plus + + the plane crashed into a residential area, highly populated destroying lots of cars and houses

So they are already fearing over +150 people dead . . .

(that's why)

Indonesian plane with 117 on board crashes into residential area UPDATE4

09.05.2005, 03:26 AM

(Adds another toll estimate, initial number of dead)

JAKARTA (AFX) - An Indonesian passenger plane with 112 passengers and five crew on board crashed into a residential neighbourhood and burst into flames today shortly after taking off from the northern city of Medan, airline officials said.

The Boeing 737-200 from the privately-owned Mandala Airlines ploughed into houses just outside the perimeter of Medan's Polonia aiport, said Ino, a spokesman for the National Search and Rescue Agency.

The airline which is part-owned by the Indonesian military said the flight which was bound for the capital Jakarta.

'The probability is that the number of victims will be high, including residents on the ground,' Mandala executive director Major General Asril Hamzah Tanjung told a news conference here.

He said the cause of the crash remains unclear, but that while the aircraft was 24 years old it had undergone extensive tests in June.

Hamka Satria Anom, the operations director of the state-owned transport insurer Jasa Raharja, told El-Shinta radio that at least 30 bodies had been recovered from the wreckage.

Television images showed firefighters battling flames leaping from the smoking wreckage. Crumpled vehicles, bicycles and several destroyed houses could also be seen.

Telephone links with the airport and the surrounding areas of Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province, were cut off following the incident.

Metro Television showed images of one wounded man with blood streaming from his face lying in the carport of a house near the crash site.

Several senior government officials were on the plane, said North Sumatra province spokesman Edi Sofyan.

North Sumatra Governor Rizal Nurdin and a former North Sumatra governor, Raja Inal Siregar, were on the flight. They were heading to the capital for talks with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The spokesman also said he had received a report that the acting governor of the tusnami-ravaged province of Aceh was on board the flight.

Well I was just watching ch10 news, they didn't even mention the plane crash, rather they had about the first 15 minutes on katrina, then literally about 10 seconds about one million Chinese people being evacuated due to a typhoon in China... wow, 10 seconds!!

sad news

hmm... i think the reason there have been so many more crashes lately is because there have been so many more planes flying. Operators put more planes on in the summer season, and more people travel. More planes flying increases the risk of it happening..... just my hypothesise
