CoolCatBad
http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/st...%5E1702,00.html EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak. Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch. The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup. When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street. Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help." With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?" CoolCatBad
I think it was mainly to be a Photo-Op for Penn. Hardly in the same league as John Travolta's efforts.
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted September 6, 2005 Veteran Share Posted September 6, 2005 Oh yeah it was a photo-op, why else would he bring a personal photographer along in a boat mean to pull people out? Looks like he wanted to be liek Geraldo and have pictures of himself loading people onto choppers and the like. I so dislike Sean Penn because he's a pretentious fake. mAcOdIn Veteran Posted September 6, 2005 Veteran Share Posted September 6, 2005 No they don't need "all the help they can get", they need real help. They don't need me to take a 6 man boat or something load it up with 4 of my friends and run one person out at a time because I want to look like a hero. Now if Sean Penn went alone or with one other person as company/security, and had the forsight to bring a working functional boat, than I would have applauded him. So in the end Sean Penn went in with a non-functional boat, already full with his personal enterauge, and was going to do what really? Is that help? And what if his boat really sunk and we had to rescue him? They need proffesionals, with real working equipment and people with the commitment to stay out there for the duration, not some hollywood nut always trying to be the activist. SamNeeds
Would everyone stop going on about photo-ops.....he's there to help out. Stop taking this p*** out of him. mAcOdIn Veteran Posted September 7, 2005 Veteran Share Posted September 7, 2005 Would everyone stop going on about photo-ops.....he's there to help out. Stop taking this p*** out of him. I dont see what you find wrong about someone helping out after a major disaster  586487369[/snapback] But he wasn't helping, nor was his plan a plan that would have helped anyone. How is filling a sinking boat to full capacity of your own people and sailing to NO helping? There's no room for survivors, and even if there were the boat was sinking, what kind of help is that? It was a photo op, the personal photographer is proof of that, I mean if you're out to rescue people you don't start by loading your rescue vehicle with non essentials like cameras. He did it purely foor selfish reasons and he did it poorly to boot, he will get all the **** I can give him for it.
