NORFOLK ? A retired city police officer admitted in federal court Tuesday to sending sexually explicit photographs of young girls over the Internet.

Dennis Lee White, 48, of Chesapeake, who had told FBI agents he retired from the Norfolk Police Department in October 2003 after 25 years, pleaded guilty to a single count of transporting child pornography by computer.

He will be sentenced Dec. 12 in U.S. District Court. He faces a mandatory minimum of five years behind bars, and a potential maximum term of 20 years.

Meanwhile, he will be free on $25,000 unsecured bond, with restrictions on his travel and contact with minors.

White said little Tuesday morning during an appearance before U.S. District Judge Jerome B. Friedman, answering questions with a simple, ?Yes, sir.?

Court documents say he became caught up in an investigation in January 2004, when an FBI agent in Buffalo, N.Y., entered an America Online chat room called ?Special Interest vy 9 10 11 12.? The agent suspected the room would be used by those interested in trading sexually explicit images of ?very young? children, ages 9 to 12.

The agent joined an e-mail listserv, and soon received an e-mail from ?DWhite5442? with two explicit images of prepubescent girls. White sent seven more similar images to the agent, according to the court file.

Records obtained from AOL identified ?DWhite5442? as White. On May 13, 2004, federal agents searched his home and seized his computer. Investigators later found 289 images of child pornography and four movies on it.

White told agents that he had viewed such images for years on the Internet and that he was sorry, according to a court record.

As part of a plea agreement, White has agreed to cooperate fully with authorities investigating such offenses.

Well, he knew it was wrong, and he's only sorry now (that he's been caught)?
