Cuba offered the help of 1500 medics for the Katrina disaster.

Should they be allowed to enter the USA and help the people from New Orleans? (~n rest of Louisana) ??

*yes, why not?

*no! they are part of the axis  of  EVIL

I think this is not the time for political conflicts,

help is help, and I think it is highly needed.

I think the feds have refused to even respond to them. On the other hand, they refused the aid we had offered them in past hurricanes. I think it was nice to see the Mexican and Canadian militaries helping us.

HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuban doctors put on stand-by a week ago by President Fidel Castro to fly to the aid of the victims of Hurricane Katrina said on Friday they hoped the United States would put politics aside and accept their help.

So far, the word from Washington has been thanks, but no thanks. The White House snubbed Cuba's offer and said Castro would do better "freeing" his Communist-run country.

Meanwhile, the 1,500 doctors are taking English language classes and brushing up on their epidemiological skills.

"We are sad about the position the American government has taken. All of us have been waiting here for eight days," said Dr. Juan Carlos Dupuy, a general practitioner and chemical lab specialist.

"This is a humanitarian problem. We have to put aside politics. We are ready to go," he said.

Cuba was playing politics when they made an offer that they knew would never be accepted.

They actually were not listed in the Axis of Evil (originally Iran, Iraq and North Korea).

The US would be unable to accept help from Cuba. That would be both an embarrassment and an acknowledgement of Cuba as a legitimate nation.

Yes poll is kinda silly, but why would Cuba even offer to help us ? That's what I don't seem to understand.

Edit: nm fred666 made it clear. I wonder what would happen if U.S. actually accepted the offer...

I volunteer for Search And Rescue in Alberta, Canada. We were put on stand-by incase we were needed. We were waiting for one single phone call, but american pride made them reject our help. We would have been there helping FAR faster than FIMA, and would not be ruling out tourists.

Uh, I don't think its American pride so much as bureaucracy. We'll take help as long as it doesn't have underlying motives. I can sure tell you Americans would like it, although its pretty clear theres a good amount of people who need to be fired for screwing up this disaster response.

Yea, I don't think the 50 people from Vancouver bothered to wait for permission, they just jumped on the first commercial flight and were there the next day.

1500 doctors would be a great help. I think the US needs to shove political issues out of the way and accept their help already.

Right, and then go right back to snubbing them after everything has been 'squared-away' so to speak?

Obviously the American people would welcome them here.

Umm, hrmm... If there are people in New Orleans who will shoot at American helicopters trying to rescue them, then I dont think a bunch of unarmed Cuban doctors would feel all too welcome......
