Rita causes 9th ward levee to breach again in NO

Rita Turns East; New Orleans Levee Leaking

HOUSTON, Texas ? Hurricane Rita (search) was veering slightly east Friday and directing her 140-winds about 75 miles east of Houston as cars crammed with evacuees jammed major arteries leading away from the Texas coast.

There are fears that the huge Category 4 storm also could cripple the heart of the nation's petrochemical industry that calls Texas home.

"It's a great test for the people of our state," Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Friday. "But we're going to get through this ... Be calm, be strong, say a prayer for Texas."

Meanwhile, in New Orleans, water spilled over a patched levee Friday, cascading into one of the city's lowest-lying neighborhoods and heightening fears that Hurricane Rita would re-flood the devastated city.

"Our worst fears came true. The levee will breach if we keep on the path we are on right now, which will fill the area that was flooded earlier," said Barry Guidry with the Georgia National Guard.

Makes you wonder why someone didn't plan ahead and reinforce said levee knowing full well this would happen, there is no denying prior knowledge unless you are just ignorant.

No, makes you wonder why they are trying to rebuild a city under sea level.

You do know they have been trying to reinforce the levees since Katrina hit. There are hundreds of miles of levees that must be addressed. If you think this is bad, just imagine what would have happened if the 17th St Canal wasn't blocked off from the lake. The flooding that has occured is little in comparison to what could have happened. The amy corps of engineer predict a 4-5 day delay. So relatively speaking, this flooding while expected, is not something that is devestating. The damage was already done, and this flood just basically delays the demolition of those houses...
