Baked Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) -- Sinking villages perched on thawing permafrost, an explosion of timber-chewing insect populations, record wildfires and shrinking sea ice are among the most obvious and jarring signs that Alaska is getting warmer as the global climate changes, scientists say.

"We are the canary in the mine, unfortunately, and the harbinger of what is yet to come for the rest of the world," said Patricia Cochran, executive director of the Anchorage-based Alaska Native Science Commission.

Atmospheric temperatures in the remote state have risen 3.6 to 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit (2 to 3 degrees Celsius) over the past five decades, according to the recently released Arctic Climate Impact Assessment, a comprehensive study by scientists from eight nations.

That heating, most pronounced in winter and spring, is much more dramatic than in the rest of the world, which has had an average increase in land surface temperatures of 1 degree Fahrenheit (0.6 Celsius) over the last century, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Many scientists believe the earth is warming because of the release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide that trap solar heat in the atmosphere.

Schools in the Fairbanks Northstar School District (Fairbanks is located roughly 360 miles north of Anchorage) have experienced closures in the last two years - the reason: rain.

In February.

I'm sorry, was that sarcasm or your opinion?

I for one think this is can be a result of global warming.

Global warming hasn't proven... infact, most scientist who even believe in global warming say there isn't enough evidence to support it yet. Even Charles D. Keeling, the so-called father of global warming, has stated that it will takes years of scientific research to prove global warming. On top of that, there are just as many scientist against the global warming theory as there are for it.

If you'd like references I can get them for you ;)

I just saw the news story on MSNBC and I certainly believe in global warming and that it is what is causing the north polar ice to melt. I just don't believe that we (humans) are responsible for it not can we stop it. It has happened too many times throughout the history of earth including most of the era's before humans existed.

Yes, Science will prove it about the time the Northern & Southern polar ice caps have disappeared.

It is proven that Antarctica is actually regaining ice and not melting like what you might think. In fact, the part that we've all heard about, the Antarctica peninsula has been melting for the last 6000 years.

I can give you the references if you need them ;)

[EDIT] Also, Antarctica makes up 90% of the world's ice. That leaves 6% for Greenland and 4% for the rest of the world. And of course, I can get those references for you too!

Cocky sort aren't you?

FYI, the study (and the scientists) they are talking about in this latest study where commissioned by President Bush himself to investigate Global Warming. It seems (not for the first time when Bush has hired scientists to investigate things for him) that they came to some very unexpected conclusions. (Or at least it appears from his perspective they did).

TBH I get the impression that there is a gradual shift going on in the US in the political attitude to Global Warming - even among some of the religious right Churches that used to be dead set against the idea. I don't know what's driving it, but I think possibly Bush is gearing the American people up to accept some harsh realities about the state of the US domestic energy supply. Maybe there is some economic benefit in fuel efficiency after all?

I wonder if there really is a policy shift in Washington if all of those who previously denied the threat of climate change will suddenly change their minds?

I beleive in global warming, and am pretty sure we will kill ourselves very quickly if something isnt done. The weather has changed, ice melting and all the crazy weather around the world recently: tsunamis, earthquakes, storms, hurricanes, floods etc etc, it wasnt like that 50 years ago now wasnt it

I believe the Earth evolves, as do other planets, and will eventually become a gas giant and then a sun, like Jupiter. The warming is natural -- Humans or not. ;)

Earth will not become a gas giant, thats proposterous. As the sun begins to enter its red giant stage Earth will heat up. As this stage of the sun makes it swell up more then eventually Earth will be baked. After that comes the celestial hiccups in which as the sun begins to fuse heavier elements from it's core the outer envelope of it's shell will be gin to be blown off, Finally it hits Supernova, when its make a final explosion of it's outer layer.

Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter, possibly all the planets in the solar system will be affected, Definately though, the inner solar system will be consumed by the sun in its red giant stage before it goes supernova.

Edit: Jupiter might be a failed star,The planet also produces a powerful magnetic field. Had the planet been somewhat more massive than it is, it would be a star. There would have been enough pressure, due to gravity, to start nuclear fusion in its core. It would shine with its own light, giving the solar system two stars (a commonly observed occurrence in other parts of the Galaxy). Had this happened, life could not have existed on Earth.
