Spain again stops African immigrants

MELILLA, Spain, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Spanish police Thursday repelled about 1,000 African migrants from entering their territory through Morocco.

The migrants were stopped after they tried to storm a razor-wire border fence between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla, the BBC reported.

Spain has beefed up its border patrol as more migrants resort to similar methods to cross into Melilla and other enclaves to gain entrance into Europe.

The latest incident was the third mass border charge this week and comes as Spain announced plans to begin repatriating illegal migrants, the BBC report said.

Spain plans to use a 1992 accord with Morocco to expel illegal entrants to Morocco, even if they are of different nationalities.

Last week, five people were crushed to death while trying to break into the other Spanish enclave of Ceuta, the report said.
