So I'm looking at potential cars to get for my first car and I just think this car is beautiful. I've seen a couple of pictures of what it could aspire to be (trying to decide whether to go a more cosmetic or engine upgrading way). Has anyone ever owned one of these, and what do you think of it?

I know that you want to avoid the Twin Turbo. Besides being expensive to work on, the turbos require rebuild at 60,000 miles (and every 60 after). Also, to do a timing belt on one of them is going to be costly. The NA (Naturally Aspirated) models have a little more room in the engine bay and are a little easier to work on. They're awesome to drive, and are on par with the supercars of their time. The Supra, NSX, etc.. They do have a tendency to eat tires, but i'm sure there is a camber kit to correct that. Perhaps check out the 300zx's forum and ask around there.

From my friends that worked at a nissan/mazda dealer, 300zxs suck balls. their engine maybe on par with the super cars of their time but their suspensions are sub par and the car is really heavy. I know a guy that owned the twin turbo model and he destroyed his clutch pretty quickly. Its too expensive for a car that performs so poorly and breaks that often. try a 240sx.

If you're looking for something a little different why not track down a VW Corrado G60 or SLC VR6

I own a Z32 TT, it's a BEAUTIFUL car, faster then a lot of cars, stage 4 modifications, 425HP at 14.5psi. If you get one, you'll need to upgrade the intake, and exhaust & intercoolers if it's a TT cause the stock one isn't that great either Stillen/ HSK packages are good will only cost 800-1400$. Turbos do "die out if you push them at around 60,000 but my timing belt has never needed to been replaced that often. Parts for the car are RARE extremely rare in some cases an oxygen sensor cost me 400$ without it the engine wouldn't start.

Protomor: your friend must be a horrible driver then, I'm on my second clutch, since "94 when I bought it. It's a heavy car but you can tune the HP to Weight ratio to so you don't feel it as much.

Gas nowadays is a killer, 15gallon tank with an engine that sucks up soo much fuel in inner city driving. Get yourself an NA or a 2+2 better on gas, not as fast but still a good car also exceptionally cheaper then a TT. It's not a car for winter driving, you'll most likely kill yourself if you have a booster in the line everytime you tap the gas(like I almost did). If you can't... love a car, treat it well, take care of all it's problems when they come up and not put them off , etc etc then get something else.
Check out my beauty :D

(The Stillen wing has been ripped off and replaced with the TT OEM wing no pictures just yet, it's being repainted)

because you NEED the O2 sensor, the engine is just built that way. I paid 400$ but got 2 of them one new from Nissan and one partially used. When you're desperate to get your car running again, you'll do almost anything. Back then I had excess cash, but since gas prices sky rocketed I wont' be able to afford the car much longer, so I'll have to get either a Mazda 3 or a '96 240SX if need be a 98+ Jetta

Yes if you really push the car, you'll get a lot of issues. Turbos will die out much sooner, you just have to treat it right, I belong to a Z club with 21 members or so, and there's one guy who's replaced his turbos 3 times in the last year because he likes to street race ricers in their Hondas lol. He destroys them in races(usually ends with a 5-7 car lead) but in return he destroys his engine. He has his psi way above normal like 17+psi on a stock intercooler and his pistons, turbos, etc just can't take the preasure.

My friend had one it was nice buy hard to work on. Let's just say even the spark plugs were a bitch. Why don't you try your hand at a Nissan 240,260 or 280 zx almost any motor can fit even a chevy 350 with superchager :).

Speaking of ricing hondas there are a lot of those little bastards around here (arizona) i have a Grand AM GT (nothing amazing i know) w/ 3.4L v6 w/ Borla exhaust from the headers back, cold air intake, new head's and cam's and a few other goodies but it looks completely stock except for the dual crome exhaust, i have fun tricking those honda bastards that think their cars are so fast.

lol it's funny, you see little ricers "OMG! YOU DRIVE A BOAT!! my little pocket rocket can destroy your car it weighs soo much!" sure. I just get into 2rd gear 5500Rpm and the turbos are nice and warm, boost kicks in and I FLY past them and my car looks complete stock lol. the look on their face is priceless "yo man you cheated!" lol. I don't mind people that drive hondas but if you're going to talk big, you better have the balls to back you up. I hate these little idiots with their 120hp engine and GIANT mufflers that make it sound like it's turbo.

I think THE best car commercial in the world is a 300ZX Commercial, it's pretty old, but man it's AWSOME! Everytime I watch it I get shivers up my spine. This commercial forced me to go out and test drive it, once I did, I fell in love.

take a look:

tell me what you think.

Always had a thing for 300ZX's - subtle modding on it looks good, I'd go for it (Y)

lol, guess I never told you guys about my friend and I's run in at this car club, this is kinda offtopic but this is my topic :D. But, he has a Volvo station wagon, and this kid with his Honda is talkin all this stuff, and he has his little assistant look under the hood of the Volvo and he says "Yeah, this Volvo will WHOOP YOUR ASS". The Honda kid backed down like a punk :)

I've seen a couple of these 300ZX's fairly cheap (5-8k), but I don't know how much work they'll need to get them running right.
