What if poverty didn't exist anymore?

Recommended Posts

Well, the population of the Earth would either have to be considerably lower, or the standard of living for everyone would have to be terrible, just not as terrible as the lowest rung of society has to suffer through now.

Basically, because the lowest rungs of society make up a large minority, the upper rungs would have to fall a considerable distance to bring the lowest rungs up a tiny bit.

Prices for things would go up. Inflation would be crazy.

How does that even begin to make sense? Care to let us in on your secret logic?

If poverty didn't exist, we'll all be poor.

There isn't enough stuff on this planet for everyone, so its better for the wealthy to keep the poor poor.

Nonsense. There is plenty for all. But some of us feel the need to move our bowels on gold plated toilet, while others amongs cn't afford food for the day.

There my be a point in time when the planet will be unable to provide for us all, but that time has yet to come.

Global Population Too High..

A New Zealand scientist from the Central Institute of Technology says the present global population of six billion people is about 30% more than the earth's biological capacity to sustain present standards of living, but growth may not even stabilize at the projected 10 billion by the year 2050.

Global Economy Consuming More Than Earth Can Yield, Expert Warns. The global economy is using natural resources faster than they can be renewed, says Lester Brown of the Washington-based Earth Policy Institute. We are releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere faster than the earth can absorb it. Our economy is based on cutting trees faster than they can grow, overpumping aquifers, and draining rivers. Soil erosion in our croplands exceeds new soil formation. We are taking fish from the ocean faster than they can reproduce. We are creating an economy whose output is inflated by drawing down the earth's natural capital.

There would ultimately be no incentive for anyone to better themselves if we were all on a level playing field. Everyone isn't geared the same, there are those who wish to better themselves, those who are lazy and have no desire or drive, and those who are content with just getting by. Society as we know it would collapse. Complacence would eventually set in without any hope of reward for excelling, and chaos would ensue.

Overpopulation is a myth

If the entire population of the world were put into the land area of Texas, each person would have an area equal to the floor space of a typical U.S. home and the population density of Texas would be about the same as Paris, France.

Gold-plated toilet. LOL

But I imagine if there poverty was eradicated, those who suffer from it would be better off, instead of barely surviving, and yes the population of the world would be considerably lesser.

poverty will always exist because when the lower rung catches up with the higher rungs, then the higher becomes higher. it is impossible to fully eradicate total poverty because someone will always have more than others. the only way is to eliminate greed and lust.

in the hypothetical however, i think the world would be a much more boring place, everyone would be strikingly similar and the need for competition would be over. it would be great to have everyone to the level where everyone has the means to survive but it will never happen as long as greed exists. oh and i agree, the population would be considerably lesser.

It's all relative though. In the U.S., our 'poor' are rich compared to the rest of the World...

Unfortunately, this is impossible for the simple fact that many people choose to live in poverse conditions. Granted, the vast majority of the poverty population are born into this state, but there are many people who live in poverse conditions because they gambled away their money, or whatnot. As terrible as it may seem, I think that just as diverse ethnic makeups produce the best results (in most cases) in jobs or schools, so too does a diverse economic makeup produce good results on the planet. As someone said earlier, if everyone had the same monetary worth, everything would be too boring.

very true, i would say the US's lower class not our impoverished destitute living under interstate overpasses. My point is in the world in general not just the US, when the lower rung catches up the upper rung, the upper rung is still ahead. it just continues this way and because of that, its impossible to completely get rid of poverty. There will always be an underdog being pushed around by unfair tax systems or unfair government policies or society in general, its unavoidable unfortunately.

Then we wouldnt have a point to live, the goal of many people is to be "better", to have more.. I think it would be booring

Well I don't know if boring is the best word, but in concept it is true. In order for me to be rich, someone must be poor. And I definitely want to be rich.

Pretty funny thread so far considering Jesus's teachings and all from the evangelicals here. Yup, poverty is THEIR fault. And of course you have to make someone else's life miserable for you to be happy. Thats a recipe for love and harmony.

Money is bad, mkay. People who take more than their fair share are bad. People who point fingers at poor people and tell them its their fault because they don't have ambition because they are lazy and slothfull are the worst. The reward for the poor is in heaven, the reward for the rich is hell.

That's bull****. Poverty is nobody's fault. Poverty is a byproduct of society. There is no such thing as fair share. You take as much as you can carry. Welcome to reality. There is no hell, there is no heaven, there is no reward, there is no punishment. It is human nature to want more, to reach for better things. Because of that someone will always stay poor. No one said life is suppose to be fair, it is what it is. So deal with it.

10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
