The guy lost more than a leg, he died  This is just crazy, IMO you should take the driving test every six months when you hit 80 years

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) -- A 93-year-old driver apparently suffering from dementia fatally struck a pedestrian and drove for three miles with the man's body through his windshield, police said.

Ralph Parker was stopped after he drove through a tollbooth on the Sunshine Skyway, Traffic Homicide Investigator Michael Jockers said. The toll taker called police, he said.

Parker was not likely to face charges because he did not appear to know what happened or where he was, said Bruce Bartlett, chief assistant in the Pinellas-Pasco County State Attorney's Office.

"He may have somewhere in his mind have realized it was a crash, but immediately forgot about it," Jockers said.

The victim's leg was severed in the Wednesday night crash, police said. The man, whose name was not released, was 52.

Parker had renewed his license in 2003.

That ****es me off that he won't face any charges, bet thats comforting to the victim's family

Ive always said you should take a test annually from 18-21 years old, then take one every 5 years unless you are in an accident up to age 55, then take one every year from then on. If you are in an accident between 21 and 55 you should have to take one every year for 5 years.

DAMNIT

this is why there should be a "RE" driving test every 5 or 10 years!

The damn goverment should be put in prision for letting someone drive at 93! what was he doing?!

I've always hated being stuck behind an elderly person driving. They do at least 10 below the speed limit and are OVERLY cautious. I tend to just back off. Cmon, if the legal age to drive is 16+, anyone over 80 (or something) shouldn't be allowed to either.

Everyone over 60 should be retested every 2-3 years, and after 70 every year.

The main issue is that AARP has blocked all legislation dealing with this, citing facts that seniors are no more dangerous then 25 and under, (then again you can make Stats say anything you want, and they do that very well).

Though you have a valid point....merely re-taking a test..isnt gonna stop people from driving..there are countless people who don't even have a valid driving license still driving (and drinking at that) plus....a man/women in that condition..who could forget they hit someone..can damn sure forget they need a license to drive.

Built in driver's license scanners to allow the ignition to start on vehicles. Most driver's licenses nowadays have a barcode on the back, if you have a valid license it will release the ignition and you can turn the key

that's another thing that's horrible...

the old people that are driving crazy don't get in the accidents themselves so they appear to be safe drivers, they cause the cars behind them to wreck because they turn across 4 lanes of traffic or run stop lights/signs....

Welll people driving without a licence are morons anyway. but thats a different matter. For the majority of people that dont have a licence, they cant/wont drive.

He is proberly a valid licence holder. But his family for 1 shouldnt allow him to have a car let along drive 1.

If my parents were 93 i wouldnt let them drive! Some blame should be put on the old mans family/helpers. Would you seriously let someone who cant remember stuff drive?

EDIT:

Good idea. Or have some type of a blood-alcohol sensor that will not allow the car to run if it's over the limit smile.gif

Some new saabs come with this, although im not 100% its REQUIRED to turn the key, i just think its there for you to test your self.

If your going to have a drink, just dont drive. People should know there limits.

and that too is a somewhat ideal...but then to what extent do you go to make it so inconvenient for the legitimate drivers...do they pass laws that:

1. require 18 digit code to unlock the door

2. require you to blow into a machine to check sobriety (gave kid 1.00 to blow)

3. swipe drivers license to activate ignition (using neighbors..mines invalid)

4. blood sample into car DNA tester to make sure you the legal owner

5. swipe index finger to check fingerprint with birth record to determine age

and the post is right....Tough Love is hard..but needs to be done..and Families and Friends need to think about the consquences...what is wrong...is that it seems laws are passed..that take away "the true responiblilty"...and that should be with the "Parents" and "Family".....Parents should be held responsible for their kids actions..and later in life...'Kids need to be responsible for the Parents'...its a cycle of life.

I would say everyone needs to take driving test every 5 years to renew their driving license.

I support a combination of these ideas. Requiring everybody to retake the test like that is unnecessary. I think that after a certain age, such as somewhere around 60 or 70 years old, people should be required to test somewhere around every 5 years. Every 2-3 years and then every year is a little bit extreme. I mean, I would support it, except for the fact that I don't want the lines at the darn DMV to get any longer and slower than they already are.

As soon as you start collecting your pension, you should be given a bus pass and forced to hand over your driving license.

To many old people are causing to many accident's !!!

Well, thats my opinion ;)
